Ministro irlandese avverte del legame tra i gruppi repubblicani

Dermot Ahern, ministro della Giustizia, dice che l’autobomba esplosa a Newry mostra “la fertilizzazione incrociata” tra Real IRA e Continuity IRA

Il ministro irlandese ha avvisato che la Real IRA e la Continuity IRA adesso sono una minaccia grave come lo erano le altre organizzazioni paramilitari durante i Troubles.

Dermot Ahern ha anche parlato di un’attuale “fertilizzazione incrociata” tra i differenti gruppi paramilitari repubblicani.

Secondo il ministro l’autobomba da 115 kg (250 libbre) esplosa lo scorso lunedì davanti al tribunale di Newry dimostra un nuovo livello di sofisticazione.

“Sembra esserci una fertilizzazione incrociata; può avere a che fare più con conoscenti o l’appartenenza familiare piuttosto che con l’ideologia. Ma comunque è una tendenza preoccupante per dimostra la crescita della loro capacità”, ha detto Ahern.

Il ministro ha ammesso che la Real IRA e la Continuity IRA hanno entrambe “significative tasche” di sostenitori nella repubblica. Tuttavia gli attacchi terroristi avvenuti negli ultimi mesi nel nord sembrano essere stati organizzati là.

“Ritengo la minaccia su questa isola pericolosa come lo fu in qualsiasi momento durante i Troubles” afferma Ahern.

Le autorità affrontano un “enigma” nel rispondere con fermezza alla crescente minaccia, in una maniera che non alieni alcune sezioni della comunità nazionalista nel nord. “Ciò che stanno provando a fare è riportare le truppe di nuovo sulle strade nordirlandesi e destabilizzare gli sforzi dei partiti politici nel raggiungere la pace definitiva”.

Con l’attacco di lunedì sera a Newry si è avuta la prima esplosione dall’attacco contro la BBC a Londra nel 2001 e, in Irlanda del Nord, da Omagh 1998. Una presunta bomba di mortaio è stata sparata contro la stazione della polizia di Craigavon sabato sera. La scorsa settimana il trentunenne Kieran Doherty è stato ritrovato morto nei pressi di Derry. La responsabilità dell’omicidio è stata rivendicata dalla Real IRA.

Ireland’s justice minister has warned that the Real IRA and Continuity IRA now pose a threat as serious as any paramilitary organisation did during the Troubles.

Dermot Ahern has also revealed that there is now “cross-fertilisation” between the dissident republican terror groups.

The minister said last Monday’s 250lb car bomb attack outside Newry court house demonstrated a new level of sophistication.

“There seems to be cross-fertilisation; it may be more to do with acquaintances or family membership than ideology. But nonetheless it is a more worrying trend because clearly their capability is growing,” Ahern said.

The minister admitted that the Real IRA and Continuity IRA both have “significant pockets” of membership in the republic. However, the terrorist attacks witnessed in the north in recent months appeared to have been organised there.

“The threat here I believe on this island is as dangerous as it was at any time during the Troubles,” said Ahern.

The authorities faced a “conundrum” in responding firmly to the growing threat in a way that would not alienate some sections of the nationalist community in the north. “What they are really at is to try and bring back troops on to the streets of Northern Ireland and to destabilise the efforts of political parties in the north to bring final peace.”

The attack on Monday night in Newry was the first dissident explosion since the BBC in London was attacked in 2001 and the first anywhere in Northern Ireland since Omagh in 1998. A suspected mortar was fired at a PSNI station in Craigavon on Saturday night. Last week 31-year-old Kieran Doherty was found shot dead just outside Derry. The Real IRA claimed responsibility for his murder.
