Ieri pomeriggio si è tenuta ad Armagh la cerimonia funebre per il cardinale Cahal Daly
Era stato Primate e Vescovo di Armagh dal 1990 al 1996. In precedenza fu vescovo per Down e Connor tra il 1982 ed il 1990.
La messa da Requiem è stata celebrata dal suo successore, il cardinale Sean Brady.
Tra i presenti nella cattedrale di San Patrizio anche la presidente d’Irlanda Mary McAleese ed il Taoiseach Brian Cowen.
Alla cerimonia ha partecipato anche l’arcivescovo di Edimburgo, Keith O’Brien, nato nella Contea di Antrim.
Insieme ala gerarchia ecclesiastica irlandese c’erano anche i rappresentanti delle altre chiese cristiane dell’isola.
La monarchia britannica era rappresentata da Lord Caledon, il Luogotenente della Contea di Armagh.
Il vice primo ministro nordirlandese Martin McGuinness era seduto a fianco di Brian Cowen. Il primo ministro Peter Robinson non ha potuto partecipare alla funzione.
Due importanti membri del DUP si sono recati, prima della cerimonia, a casa del cardinale Brady per portare le condoglianze del loro leader al Primate d’Irlanda.
Sammy Wilson e Arlene Foster sono arrivati insieme all’Ara Coeli accanto alla Cattedrale di San Patrizio, dove sono stati accolti dal cardinale Brady. Neanche loro hanno partecipato alla messa da Requiem per il cardinale Daly.
Neppure il Nunzio apostolico né il cardinale Desmond Connell hanno partecipato alla funzione. Nel corso del funerale è stato letto ai 1.000 partecipanti il messaggio di cordoglio di Papa Benedetto XVI.
“Ricordo con gratitudine i lunghi anni di servizio pastorale devoto del cardinale Daly, come prete, vescovo e Primate d’Irlanda, il suo aiuto come membro del Collegio dei Cardinali e specialmente gli sforzi sostenuti nella promozione della giustizia e della pace in Irlanda del Nord”, ha affermato il Papa.
Dopo la cerimonia, il corpo del cardinale Daly è stato tumulato nei terreni della cattedrale, vicino ai suoi predecessori.

Mourners attend Cardinal Daly’s funeral
The funeral of former Catholic Primate of All Ireland Cardinal Cahal Daly has taken place in Armagh this afternoon.
He had served as the Primate and Bishop of Armagh from 1990 until 1996. Previously, he had served as Bishop in the Down and Connor area from 1982 until 1990.
Requiem Mass was celebrated by his successor Cardinal Seán Brady.
President Mary McAleese and Taoiseach Brian Cowen were among those who attended the Mass in St Patrick’s Cathedral.
Also in attendance was the Cardinal Archbishop of Edinburgh, Keith O’Brien, who was also born in Co Antrim.
Most of the Irish hierarchy were joined by leaders of the island’s other larger Christian denominations at the Mass.
The British monarch was represented by Lord Caledon, the Lord Lieutenant of Co Armagh.
Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness was seated beside Mr Cowen during the Mass. However, First Minister Peter Robinson was unable to attend.
Two leading members of the DUP earlier arrived at Cardinal Seán Brady’s home in Armagh to convey the sympathy of their party leader to the Catholic Primate.
Sammy Wilson and Arlene Foster arrived together at ‘Ara Coeli’ beside St Patrick’s Cathedral where they were greeted at the front door by Cardinal Brady. They did not attend Dr Daly’s Requiem Mass in the Cathedral.
Neither the Papal Nuncio nor Cardinal Desmond Connell attended the service. However, a message to the more than 1,000 mourners was read out from Pope Benedict.
‘I recall with gratitude Cardinal Daly’s long years of devoted pastoral service to the Church, as priest, bishop and primate of all-Ireland, his assistance as a member of the College of Cardinals and especially his sustained efforts in the promotion of justice and peace in Northern Ireland,’ he said.
After the Mass, Cardinal Daly was buried in the Cathedral grounds beside his three immediate predecessors.
