MP chiedono spiegazioni a Saville per il ritardo

Bloody Sunday, Derry

MPs call for Saville delay explanation

A powerful committee of MPs has called on Lord Saville to explain why his long awaited report on Bloody Sunday has again been delayed.

The Northern Ireland Affairs Committee renewed its invitation to the Law Lord to appear before them to say why the report into the inquiry set up by former Prime Minister Tony Blair and opened in April 1998 has been put back yet again.

Lord Saville last week wrote to Northern Ireland Secretary Shaun Woodward to explain why the report expected to be published this autumn would not now be handed to the Government before the end of next March.

It is due to run to thousands of pages and it is understood the peer did not realise how long it would take publishers to get it ready for printing once he handed it over.

It is the latest in a series of delays and Lord Saville was invited last year to give evidence to the committee when a previous delay was announced.

The inquiry has cost some £189 million so far and the bill is still rising towards £200 million.

Sir Patrick Cormack, chairman of the committee, said: “There is such anxiety in so many quarters about this further delay that I would like to repeat our invitation.

“I can assure Lord Saville that we would not seek to embarrass him by asking questions about the content of his inquiry or possible recommendations.”

Sir Patrick added: “Appearing before the committee would give him the opportunity to explain precisely why it has been necessary to have had these repeated delays, each one of which dashes hopes and expectations.”

Fourteen people died in Londonderry on Bloody Sunday, January 30 1972 – 13 during a civil rights march in the Bogside and one later from the injuries suffered.

A spokeswoman for Lord Saville said he had received the invitation and would be writing to the committee. She did not say whether he would accede to their request.
