“Nessun colloquio” tra i governi e i gruppi repubblicani

Entrambi i governi hanno insistito che non ci sono colloqui, diretti o indiretti, tra loro ed i repubblicani

Dopo un incontro tenutosi vicino a Dundalk per discutere della situazione sicurezza, il ministro della Giustizia irlandese Dermot Ahern ed il Segretario di Stato per l’Irlanda del Nord Owen Paterson hanno affermato che i repubblicani sono una minaccia ma entrambe le giurisdizioni stanno lavorando insieme per porre fine al problema.

Il ministro Ahern ha detto che “secondo quando sono a conoscenza” non ci sono colloqui in corso.

Riconosce che i gruppi repubblicani potrebbero svolgere azioni di reclutamento, ma questo non coinvolgerebbe un numero elevato di persone.

Secondo Ahern le persone coinvolte non hanno un’agenda politica e neppure obiettivi. Stanno negando, prosegue il ministro, la volontà della popolazione irlandese.

Paterson ritiene che nei gruppi repubblicani vi siano poche persone, ma non per questo non sono un pericolo.

Ha affermato di aver incontrato ieri sera il Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy e che entrambi stanno lavorando “come squadra per risolvere il problema”.

Secondo il Segretario, i dissidenti potrebbero effettuare un reclutamento, ma “in maniera modesta”.

Sulla questione colloqui, Paterson insiste nel dire che non sono in corso.

“Non possiamo avere un negoziato serio con persone che solo due settimane fa hanno cercato di uccidere due bambini. Questo non è il modo con cui possiamo andar avanti”, ha riferito ai giornalisti.

‘No talks’ between governments & NI dissidents

Both the Irish and British governments have insisted there are no talks, direct or indirect, taking place between them and dissident republicans.

Speaking following a meeting near Dundalk today to discuss the security situation, Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern and Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Owen Paterson said the dissidents did pose a threat but both jurisdictions were working together to end this problem.

Minister Ahern said that ‘to the best of my knowledge’ there were no talks going on.

He acknowledged that the dissidents may be recruiting, but said this did not involve large numbers of people.

He said those involved had no political agenda and no focus. They were, he added, denying the will of the Irish people.

Mr Paterson said he believed the dissidents were small in number, but that did not mean they were not a danger.

He said he had met Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy last night and said everyone was working ‘as a team to smoke out this problem’.

He said the dissidents may be recruiting ‘in a modest way’.

On the issue of talking to the groups, Mr Paterson insisted there were no talks.

‘We cannot have serious negotiations with people who only two weeks ago, tried to kill two children. That is not the way we can carry on,’ he told reporters.
