Nel 2001 il Consiglio comunale aveva deliberato di assegnare il nome del membro dell’IRA Raymond McCreesh al parco giochi di Patrick Street – nonostante l’opposizione del 16% dei residenti. Gli unionisti ricorsero alla Equality Commission (Commissione per la parità) che nel 2008 chiese una valutazione d’impatto sulla parità.
Ma un sotto-comitato del Consiglio comunale questa settimana ha preso la decisione definitiva: intitolare il parco a Raymond McCreesh è conformoe al loro obbligo giuridico di “promuovere le pari opportunità e le buone relazioni tra le persone di diversa fede religiosa e di differente opinione politica”.
Il consigliere dell’UKIP Henry Reilly ha affermato: “Raymond McCreesh instillò tanta paura nella comunità unionista. Quando fu catturato stava preparando un’imboscata contro la polizia e l’esercito, con un fucile che venne utilizzato nel massacro di Kingsmills.
“Questa arma venne usata per sparare contro l’agricoltore protestante Sammy Rodgers cui Raymond McCreesh aveva consegnato il latte nei panni di un lattaio. La valutazione d’impatto della parità a Newry e Mourne significa che gli unionisti devono vivere con un Consiglio che ha formalmente onorarto un terrorista condannato, ufficialmente legato al massacro di Kingsmills”.
Nel 1977 Raymond McCreesh venne condannato per tentato omicidio, cospirazione a commettere un assassinio, possesso di armi da fuoco con l’intenzione di mettere in pericolo la vita e appartenenza ai Provisional IRA. Morì durante lo sciopero della fame del 1981. L’anno scorso l’Historical Enquiries Team della PSNI lo collegava ad una serie di omicidi compiuti con l’Armalite con il quale era stato arrestato, compreso il massacro di Kingsmill del 1976.
A Kingsmill 10 lavoratori protestanti furono fermati mentre si recavano al lavoro e uccisi a colpi di arma da fuoco. Un altro uomo sopravvisse.
L’Armalite con cui fu arrestato Raymond McCreesh è stato collegato dall’HET ai seguenti attacchi:
- gli omicidi dell’agente della RUC David McNeice e del soldato dei Royal Jackets Michael Gibson durante un’imboscata a Meigh nel 1974;
- il tentato omicidio dell’agricoltore protestante Samuel Rodgers a Camlough nel 1975;
- l’attacco contro un elicottero militare e il tentato omicidio del personale delle forze di sicurezza a Carrickbroad, Forkhill, nel 1976;
- il tentato omicidio del personale delle forze di sicurezza a Mountain House, Belleek, Newry, nel 1976, dove l’Armalite venne recuperato.
Un portavoce dello Sinn Fein, ha detto ieri sera: “È chiaro che i rappresentanti di Newry stavano esprimendo la volontà della stragrande maggioranza delle persone che li hanno eletti al Consiglio. Il nome del parco non deve essere cambiato”.
Il Newry and Mourne District Council ha detto che la decisione è stata presa da un sotto-comitato e non può commentare fino a quando il Consiglio non prenderà una decisione il prossimo 3 dicembre. Lo SDLP non ha rilasciato commenti.

Playground named after IRA gunman Raymond McCreesh
The council voted to name the Patrick Street playground after IRA man Raymond McCreesh in 2001 – despite the fact that 16 per cent of residents opposed the change in a survey. Unionists appealed to the Equality Commission which called for an equality impact assessment in 2008.
But a council sub-committee finally decided this week that naming the park after McCreesh complies with their legal requirement to “promote equality of opportunity and good relations between persons of different religious belief and political opinion”.
UKIP councillor Henry Reilly said: “Raymond McCreesh created so much fear in the unionist community. When he was caught he was setting up an ambush for police and Army with a rifle which was used in the Kingsmills massacre.
“This weapon was used to shoot Protestant farmer Sammy Rodgers who Raymond McCreesh delivered milk to as a milkman. Our equality impact assessment in Newry and Mourne means that unionists have to live with the council formally honouring a convicted terrorist who has been officially linked to the Kingsmills massacre.”
In 1977 McCreesh was convicted of attempted murder, conspiracy to murder, possession of firearms with intent to endanger life and PIRA membership. He died on hunger strike in 1981. Last year the PSNI Historical Enquiries Team linked him, along with two others, to a string of IRA murders committed with the Armalite he was caught with, including the Kingsmills massacre in 1976.
In that attack 10 Protestant workmen were stopped on their way home from work and gunned down. An eleventh man survived.
The Armalite McCreesh was arrested with was also linked by HET to:
- the murders of RUC Constable David McNeice and rifleman Michael Gibson (Royal Jackets) at an ambush at Meigh in 1974;
- the attempted murder of Protestant farmer Samuel Rodgers at Camlough in 1975;
- the attack on a military helicopter and attempted murder of security force personnel at Carrickbroad, Forkhill, in 1976;
- the attempted murder of security force personnel at Mountain House, Belleek, Newry, in 1976, where the Armalite was recovered.
A Sinn Fein spokesman said last night: “Clearly the representatives of Newry were expressing the wishes of the vast majority of people who elect them to the council. The name of the park should not be changed.”
Newry and Mourne District Council said the decision was taken by a sub-committee and it could not comment until the full council makes a decision on Monday, December 3. The SDLP had not commented last night.
