Newry: “non lasceremo la nostra casa”

Maura Horbash, Newry

Family ordered out ‘will not leave’

A mother of four has told UTV she will not leave her home in Newry after a gang of men ordered her out and threatened to kill her.

Maura Horbash was at home with her children, the youngest aged just six weeks old, when the crowd arrived at their door on Thursday evening and told them they had 24 hours to get out.

“It was at 6pm and about eight men came to the house,” she said.

“The man was shouting at me and he told me if I don’t move in 24 hours he would come and set fire to my house. It was very scary last night.”

Maura’s mother Stella was also at the house in Pound Street at the time.

She said: “It was very frightening. I didn’t sleep all night and the children were crying all night.”

Police are treating the attack on the young Romanian family as a race hate crime.

Newry and Mourne Sinn Féin councillor Valerie Harte described the incident as “abhorrent”.

She added: “Any attack on a family home is to be condemned outright.”
