North Belfast: il campo lealista “resterà fino al passaggio della parata”

Protest camp ‘stays until march passes’

Campo lealista in Twaddell Avenue, Belfast

Loyalist campaigners who have set up a protest camp in north Belfast say they will stay there until the lodges and bands complete their Twelfth parade.

The Twaddell Avenue camp – which has been in place for almost two months and is supported by the main unionist parties and loyal orders – is manned 24 hours a day.

Organisers of the camp are also calling for the Parades Commission to be removed after it ruled that Orangemen could not return past the Ardoyne shop fronts on 12 July.

The camp was visited by senior members of the Orange Order on Thursday.

Belfast Grand Master George Chittick told UTV: “The Orange Order is fully behind the members of the three Ligoniel lodges.

“At night when you come up here you meet members from Fermanagh, Tyrone, Armagh, Down, Antrim and Londonderry – they’re all here supporting their brethren who are looking for their civil and religious liberty to walk home.”

Violence flared in north Belfast over the summer after police enforced a Parades Commission determination that an Orange feeder parade could not pass the Ardoyne shops.

Officers came under attack from loyalists throwing missiles, including petrol bombs, heavy masonry and fireworks. Ceremonial swords were also used as dozens of police were hurt.

Earlier this month the PSNI reported that a total of 114 people have been arrested and 82 charged for offences related to Twelfth trouble in the north and east of the city.
