Nuove speranze di ritrovare uno dei “Disappeared”

Gli esperti in Irlanda del Nord che cercando il corpo di uno dei cosiddetti “Disappeared” (gli Scomparsi, fatti sparire dalle formazioni paramilitari) hanno ricevuto una mappa che potrebbe fornire indizi vitali.

La nuova informazione è stata inviata in forma anonima ed indica un’area non analizzata in precedenza nella zona di confine nella Contea di Managhan, dove potrebbe essere sepolto Charlie Armstrong.

L’uomo, 57 anni, sparì dalla sua abitazione vicino a Crossmaglen nell’agosto 1981.

La figlia di Armstrong, Anna McShane, ha affermato l’importanza che il mittente della mappa entri in contatto con la Independent Commission for the Location of Victims’ Remains (Commissione indipendente per la localizzazione dei resti delle vittime).

“Faccio appello dal profondo del mio cuore e a nome di mia madre Kathleen alla persona che ha inviato la mappa, affinché contatti la Commissione”, ha detto.

“Tutto ciò che desideriamo è riportare a casa papà per l’ultima volta, dargli una sepoltura cristiana e darci una tomba da visitare e su cui piangere”.

Il padre di 5 figli di Crossmaglen è stato preso mentre si recava a messa. E’ uno dei “Disappeared” che si ritiene siano stati assassinati dall’IRA e sepolti in luoghi nascosti durante i Troubles.

Anna McShane ha aggiunto: “E’ difficile tenere sotto controllo le emozioni perché essere una delle famiglie degli Scomparsi è come essere sulle montagne russe delle emozioni.

“Da una parte questo potrebbe essere l’opportunità per la quale preghiamo da tanti altri, e dall’altra potrebbe portare ad un altro colpo al cuore”.

Altri luoghi sono stati analizzati vicino a Carrickmacross, non lontano dal confine con l’Irlanda del Nord.

Un portavoce della Independent Commission for the Location of Victims’ Remains ha detto: “Questo potrebbe essere l’elemento di cui avevamo disperatamente bisogno nella ricerca dei resti di Charlie Armstrong”.

Questa è la terza mappa ricevuta collegata a questo caso e gli investigatori stanno prendendo seriamente il nuovo materiale. Chiedono alla persona che l’ha inviata di contattarli discretamente, sia direttamente che indirettamente.

Il rappresentante della Commissione ha aggiunto: “Abbiamo sempre creduto fosse sepolto in una zona paludosa di Colagh, nella Contea di Monaghan, ma sfortunatamente le ricerche, compresa quella intrapresa dalla commissione la scorsa estate, non hanno dato alcun frutto.

“Questa nuova informazione è potenzialmente significativa. E’ fondamentale per noi parlare con la persona che ha inviato la mappa.

“Crediamo siamo vicini al ritrovamento di Charlie Armstrong e una conversazione con il mittente della mappa potrebbe fornire il fondamentale e finale pezzo di informazioni di cui abbiamo bisogno”.

Fresh hopes over ‘Disappeared’ man

Experts in Northern Ireland searching for the body of one of the so-called ‘Disappeared’ have received a map that could provide vital clues.

The fresh information was sent anonymously and indicated a previously unsearched area of the borderland in nearby Co Monaghan where Charlie Armstrong could be buried.

The 57-year-old disappeared from his home near Crossmaglen in Co Armagh in August 1981.

Mr Armstrong’s daughter Anna McShane said it was important the sender contacted the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims’ Remains.

‘I would appeal, from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of my mother Kathleen, for the person who sent the map to contact the Commission,’ she said.

‘All we want is to bring Daddy home for the last time, give him a Christian burial and let us have a grave to visit and grieve.’

The father-of-five from Crossmaglen went missing on his way to Mass. He is one of ‘The Disappeared’ who is believed to have been murdered by the IRA and secretly buried during the Troubles.

Ms McShane added: ‘It’s difficult to keep your feelings in check because being one of the families of The Disappeared, is like being on an emotional roller coaster.

‘On the one hand this could be the breakthrough we’ve been praying for over the years and on the other it could lead to further heartbreak.’

Several locations have already been searched near Carrickmacross, not far from the border with Northern Ireland.

A spokesman for the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims’ Remains said: ‘This potentially could be the breakthrough we’ve been desperately hoping for in our search for the remains of Charlie Armstrong.’

This is the third map which has been received in the case and investigators are taking the new material seriously. They want the person who sent it to contact them in confidence either directly or indirectly.

The Commission representative added: ‘We have always believed that he is buried in a bogland area in Colagh, Co Monaghan but unfortunately, searches including one undertaken by the Commission last summer, have been unsuccessful.

‘This new information is potentially significant. It is crucially important that we speak to the person who has sent the map.

‘We believe we could be close to finding Charlie Armstrong’s remains and a conversation with the person who sent this map, could provide that vital, final piece of information we need.’
