Questa possibilità giunge dopo il sequestro di 3.500 sterline da parte degli agenti che a settembre 2015 indagavano su attività sospette nella zona di Derry.
La richiesta di restituzione del denaro da parte di una persona è stata respinta martedì presso il tribunale di Antrim.
Il Soprintendente Mark McEwan, comandante del distretto PSNI, ha detto: “Quando è stato sequestrato, credevamo che il denaro fosse nelle mani di un’organizzazione proscritta nota come ‘New IRA’.
“Sappiamo che queste persone sono coinvolte nella criminalità che crea danno e sofferenza nella nostra comunità. Questa legge ci offre uno strumento per contrastare le attività illegali.
“Significa che il denaro poteva venire utilizzato per acquistare armi ed esplosivi per attaccare i membri della comunità, tra cui gli agenti della PSNI, ma adesso è stato tolto dalla circolazione”.
Il denaro sequestrato, secondo la legge, viene trattenuto dal Tesoro ed una parte viene assegnata alla PSNI.
Il Soprintendente McEwan ha aggiunto: “La polizia può utilizzare questo denaro per operazioni specifiche per combattere il crimine e la criminalità e per mantenere le persone al sicuro. Il denaro non può essere utilizzato, ad esempio, per acquistare attrezzature di polizia”.

Police use new powers to seize ‘New IRA’ money
The PSNI has used new powers for the first time to forfeit money that was believed to be in the hands of violent dissident republicans.
It follows the seizure of £3,500 by officers investigating suspicious activity in Derry-Londonderry in September last year.
A claim by an individual to contest the forfeiture was dropped at Antrim Crown Court on Tuesday.
Superintendent Mark McEwan, the District Commander, said: “When it was seized, we believed the money was in the hands of a proscribed organisation known as the ‘New IRA’.
“We know that these people are involved in criminality that creates harm and suffering in our community. This legislation gives us a tool to help us tackle illegal activity.
“It means that money that may have been used to buy guns and explosives to attack members of the community, including police officers, has been taken out of circulation.”
Money seized under the legislation is retained by the Treasury, with a portion being allocated to the PSNI.
Supt McEwan added: “Police can use this money for specific operations to combat crime and criminality and to keep people safe. It cannot, for example, be used to buy police equipment.”
