Nuovo arresto per attacco di Massereene Barracks

La polizia che indaga sull’attacco della Real IRA contro alcuni soldati della base dell’esercito di Antrim, avvenuto a marzo, ha fermato un uomo di 43 anni

L’uomo, fermato martedì a West Belfast, viene interrogato anche per il tentato omicidio di cinque persone, sempre nel medesimo attacco.

Nel frattempo, il 22enne arrestato per la morte del poliziotto Stephen Carroll, avvenuta a Craigavon, è stato rilasciato.

Un rapporto è stato inviato al Public Prosecution Service.

I genieri Patrick Azimkar e Mark Quinsey vennero colpiti a morte all’esterno della caserma dell’esercito britannico di Massereene, nella cittadina di Antrim, da un commando della Real IRA.

Due giorni dopo un attacco della Continuity IRA colpì e uccise l’agente di polizia Stephen Carroll.

I due giovani soldati erano i primi a morire sul suolo irlandese in 12 anni, mentre l’ultimo agente di polizia ucciso in un attacco risaliva al 1998.

Man arrested over soldier murders

Police investigating the Real IRA murders of two soldiers at an Antrim Army base in March have arrested a 43-year-old man.

The man, who was arrested in west Belfast on Tuesday, is also being questioned about the attempted murder of five people at Massereene Barracks.

Meanwhile, a 22-year-old man questioned about the murder of Constable Stephen Carroll in Craigavon has been released.

A report will be sent to the Public Prosecution Service.

Sappers Patrick Azimkar and Mark Quinsey were shot dead outside Massereene barracks in Antrim by the Real IRA.

Two days later, Constable Carroll was murdered by the Continuity IRA.

The two young soldiers were the first to be murdered in Northern Ireland in 12 years, while Constable Carroll’s murder was the first of a police officer in NI since 1998.
