Una banda di 100 lealisti è responsabile dei disordini avvenuti a Portadown nella sera di venerdì
I poliziotti sono finiti sotto lancio di bombe di vernice, bottiglie incendiarie e altri oggetti. Pesanti martelli sono stati utilizzati per danneggiare i veicoli corazzati della PSNI.
Una portavoce della polizia ha confermato l’impiego di proiettili di plastica durante i disordini, continuati fino alle prime ore della mattina.
Per radunare la gente proveniente da fuori zona sono stati usati i social network e i telefoni cellulari. Inizialmente si doveva trattare di una protesta pacifica per la rimozione delle bandiere lealiste ad opera di alcuni giovani repubblicani saliti sui lampioni dell’area unionista.
Mentre la violenza proseguiva nella notte, la polizia avvertiva gli automobilisti di evitare alcune zone di Portadown per evitare di finire negli scontri.
John O’Dowd, parlamentare dello Sinn Fein, dice che i responsabili sono lealisti.
“Ciò che abbiamo visto sono un centinaio di lealisti che attaccano la polizia e cercano di colpire le abitazioni nazionaliste di Portadown per diverse ore”, afferma.
“Faccio appello affinché la calma ritorni per le strade di Portadown. Non ho dubbi che la grande maggioranza della popolazione, siano della comunità unionista o nazionalista, vogliono vedere la fine di questi disordini. Vogliono vedere l’ordine restaurato e vogliono proseguire con le loro vite”.
La consigliera comunale di Alliance Party, Sheila McQuaid, ha definito i disordini “profondamente dannosi” per la zona.
“Sono disgustata per le attività delle persone coinvolte in questi disordini” ha affermato.
“Chiedo alla gente di agire con responsabilità. Questo tipo di incidenti sono profondamente dannosi e abbiamo bisogno di assicurare la stabilità per far crescere la nostra economia”.
Durante la scorsa settimana la polizia è finita sotto attacco in diverse zone dell’Irlanda del Nord.
Disordini erano già scoppiati a Portadown mercoledì sera, nella zona di Garvaghy Road.
Nelle prime ore di martedì mattina due agenti di polizia erano stati feriti nel corso delle violenze avvenute nelle zone di Craigwell Avenue e Obin Street.

Loyalist mob blamed for Portadown riots
A 100-strong mob of loyalists were behind rioting that took place in Portadown on Friday night, police have said.
Officers came under sustained attack from paint bombs, petrol bombs and other missiles – sledge hammers were also used to damage armoured PSNI vehicles.
A police spokeswoman confirmed that a number of plastic baton rounds were fired during the trouble which continued into the early hours of the morning.
It is believed social network sites and mobile phones were used to gather people from the outside the area for what was originally planned to be a peaceful protest over the alleged removal of flags.
As the violence continued into the night, police advised motorists to avoid the Corcrain and Ballyoran areas, Obins Drive, Union Street and surrounding areas.
Sinn Féin MLA John O’Dowd said loyalists were to blame for the trouble.
“What is known is that around 100 loyalists attacked police and attempted to attack nationalist homes in the Portadown area over several hours,” he said.
“I would appeal for calm to return to the streets of Portadown. I’m in no doubt that the vast majority of people, whether they are from the unionist or nationalist community want to see an end to this trouble. They want to see order restored and they want to be able to get on with their lives.”
Upper Bann Alliance councillor Sheila McQuaid called the trouble “deeply damaging” for the local area.
“I am disgusted at the activities of those involved in this disorder,” she said.
“I would appeal for people to act responsibly. This type of incident is deeply damaging and we need to ensure stability to help us grow our economy.”
Police have come under attack across parts of Northern Ireland in the past week.
Rioting already broke out in Portadown on Wednesday night, this time in the Garvaghy Road area.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning two police officers were injured after trouble also erupted in the Craigwell Avenue and Obin Street areas of the town.
