Il West Belfast Community Safety Forum (WBCSF) ha detto di aver ragione di ritenere che l’Official Republican Movement (ORM) era responsabile per gli spari contro un uomo nella zona di Fort Street di lunedì sera ed era altresì coinvolto nella sparatoria avvenuta quattro settimane prima contro il quarantacinquenne Paul McGoran mentre beveva all’Hawthorn Bar.
Poco prima delle 20 di lunedì tre uomini, di cui uno vestito con una giacca della Royal Mail e che trasporta una scatola bianca, sono entrati nella casa di un uomo di 36 anni in Fort Street e gli hanno sparato tre volte a una gamba. La sua compagna e la figlia di quattro anni erano in casa al momento dell’attacco. La vittima è stata portata in ospedale per medicare le ferite, non ritenute pericolose per la vita.
Nell’edizione del 12 febbraio dell’Andersonstown News, Paul McGoran aveva raccontato di come era stato colpito due volte ad una gamba mentre era seduto all’Hawthorn Bar, pochi minuti dopo ha avuto un alterco verbale con un altro aventore. McGoran ha confutato le voci che circolavano da tempo, secondo cui era stato preso di mira per aver estratto un coltello durante la discussione.
Parlando di questo ultimo ferimento, Seamus Finucane del WBCSF ha detto che “un processo investigativo” era stato necessario con il contributo di tutti i settori della comunità per capire il motivo per cui questi attacchi stanno avvenendo.
“Crediamo che l’ORM sia collegato ad alcuni incidenti come questo negli ultimi anni”, ha detto Finucane, che è stato minacciato dai repubblicani di Oglaigh na hEireann. “Non c’è stato nessun clamore per queste sparatorie, perché i riflettori su questo tipo di attività di solito cadono su altri gruppi, e se non siete qui a lavorare nella zona daretela responsabilità a questi gruppi sotto i riflettori e non all’ORM”.
Finucane ha chiesto all’ORM di farsi avanti e giustificare la sparatoria.
“L’ORM si suppone sia in cessate-il-fuoco dal 1972, quindi dove stanno prendendo le loro armi?” ha affermato.
“Hanno bisogno di venire fuori a spiegare perché stanno prendendo di mira i giovani e gli adulti più vulnerabili nella nostra comunità, e devono fermarsi subito”.
Quando è stato chiesto se le sparatorie di Fort Street e dell’Hawthorn Bar sono state effettuate dallo stesso gruppo, un portavoce della PSNI ha rifiutato di rilasciare alcun commento.
“Le indagini sono ancora in corso in entrambi i casi”, ha detto il portavoce.
ORM behind shootings: claim
The West Belfast Community Safety Forum (WBCSF) said it had reason to believe that the Official Republican Movement (ORM) were behind the shooting of a man in the Fort Street area on Monday night and were also responsible for the shooting four weeks earlier of 45-year-old Paul McGoran as he drank in the Hawthorn Bar.
Just before 8pm on Monday night three men, one described as wearing a Royal Mail jacket and carrying a white box, entered the Fort Street home of a 36-year-old man and shot him three times in the leg. His partner and four-year-old daughter were in the house at the time of the attack. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment on his injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.
In the February 12 edition of the Andersonstown News, Paul McGoran spoke of how he was shot twice in the leg while sitting the Hawthorn Bar, minutes after he had a verbal altercation with another patron. Mr McGoran refuted allegations that were circulating at the time that he was targeted for pulling a knife during the argument.
Speaking about this latest shooting, Seamus Finucane of the WBCSF said “an investigative process” was needed with input from all sectors within the community to ascertain why these attacks are taking place.
“We believe that the ORM has been linked to several incidents like this over the past number of years,” said Mr Finucane, who is himself under threat from dissident republican group Óglaigh na hÉireann. “There’s been no outcry to these two shootings because the spotlight on this sort of activity usually falls on other groups, and unless you are here working in the area you’re going to assume it’s the responsibility of one of these groups in the spotlight and not the ORM.”
Mr Finucane has called on the ORM to come out and justify the shootings.
“The ORM are supposed to have been on ceasefire since back in 1972, so where are they getting their weapons from?” he said.
“They need to come out and explain why they are targeting vulnerable young people and adults in our community and they need to stop it now.”
When asked if the Fort Street and Hawthorn Bar shootings were carried out by the same group, a spokesperson for the PSNI said they wouldn’t be commenting.
“Investigations are still ongoing into both incidents,” said the spokesperson.
