Uno dei gruppi coinvolti nella recente ondata di violenza repubblicana in Irlanda del Nord ha detto che la maggior parte dei suoi attivisti sono ex membri dei Provisional IRA.
Il gruppo nega di essere coinvolto in incontri segreti con il governo, ma dice che ci sono stati “tentativi indiretti” da parte del governo per aprire canali di comunicazione.
Ad inizio mese, Oglaigh na hEireann (ONH) ha fatto esplodere una bomba da 200 libbre (circa 90 kg) al di fuori della principale stazione di polizia a Derry, e ad aprile ha lasciato una bomba fuori dal quartier generale dell’MI5 in Irlanda del Nord.
“La stragrande maggioranza dei nostri membri sono ex membri dei Provisional IRA che hanno riconosciuto una credibile alternativa in ONH, e alcuni non era stato coinvolto con ogni altro gruppo,” ha riferito all’Irish News l’innominato membro dell’Army Council di ONH.
E’ la prima intervista dettagliata fornita da ONH da quanto emerso quattro anni fa.
Durante il fine settimana ci sono state segnalazioni che i dissidenti intedono colpire la conferenza Tory a Birmingham alla fine di quest’anno.
Il membro ONH ha detto: “Ci sono rapporti ogni Domenica su ciò che ONH avrebbe intenzione di fare, ma non parliamo a giornali scandalistici.
“In futuro, colpiremo l’appareato britannico, che dovrebbero essere presente a Belfast, Birmingham e Londra.
“Va bene dire alla gente che non abbiamo la capacità. Un anno fa, hanno detto che non potevamo nemmeno far esplodere una bomba”.
E ammette di aver solo un piccolo numero di membri e di poco sostegno, ma si dice determinato a distruggere la stabilità politica in Irlanda del Nord.
Il membro di ONH ha detto: “Quello che intendiamo raggiungere è la capacità di sconvolgere continuamente e esporre il mito di normalizzazione.
“Abbiamo intenzione di mordere le caviglie dei britannici a fine di costringerli in una situazione dove si aprono i negoziati sulla questione della ingerenza negli affari britannico irlandese”.
Anche sull’Irish News il capo della Chiesa cattolica in Irlanda, il cardinale Sean Brady, ha descritto la violenza dei repubblicani come “male”.
Ha aggiunto: “E’ immorale e un’offesa a Dio.
“Mi appello a tutti a respingere ogni tentativo di attirare una nuova generazione di giovani verso la futilità, la miseria e il male della violenza”.

Dissident group claims members are former IRA
One of the groups involved in the recent upsurge of dissident republican violence in Northern Ireland has said that most of its activists are former members of the Provisional IRA.
The group denies being involved in secret meetings with the government, but it claims there have been “indirect attempts” by the government to open channels of communication.
Earlier this month, Oglaigh na hEireann (ONH) exploded a 200lb bomb outside the main police station in Londonderry, and in April it left a bomb outside MI5 headquarters in Northern Ireland.
“The vast majority of our members are former members of the Provisional IRA who recognised a credible alternative in ONH, and a few had previously not been involved with any other group,” an un-named member of the ONH ‘army council’ told the Irish News.
It is the first detailed interview given by ONH since it emerged four years ago.
At the weekend, there were reports that dissidents intended targeting the Tory Party conference in Birmingham later this year.
The ONH member said: “There are reports every Sunday about what ONH are going to do but we do not speak to tabloid newspapers.
“In the future, we will target the British apparatus, should that be in Belfast, Birmingham or London.
“It’s OK for people to say we don’t have the capability. A year ago, they said we couldn’t even detonate a bomb.”
It admits to having only a small number of members and very little support, but says it is determined to wreck political stability in Northern Ireland.
The ONH member said: “What we intend to achieve is to continually upset and expose this myth of normalisation.
“We intend to nick at the heels of the Brits to eventually force them into a situation where they open up negotiations on the issue of the British interference in Irish affairs.”
Also in the Irish News, the head of the Catholic Church in Ireland, Cardinal Sean Brady, described dissident violence as “evil”.
He added: “It is immoral and an offence against God.
“I appeal to all to reject any attempt to entice a new generation of young people into the futility, misery and evil of violence.”
