In una serie di dichiarazioni le diverse fazioni repubblicane si sono impegnate in una dura guerra verbale.
Al centro della storia è la questione della cooperazione comunitaria con la PSNI.
Nei giorni scorsi Oglaigh na hEireann ha avvertito che non avrebbe tollerato “atti di tradimento” – ovvero il passaggio di informazioni alla polizia che potrebbe portare all’arresto dei suoi membri.
La dichiarazione non riportava alcun nome, ma la PSNI ha avvertito Seamus Finucane, una volta figura eminente dell’IRA e ora impegnato nel lavoro comunitrio a West Belfast, che la sua vita era in pericolo.
Ha detto che stava trattando la questione “molto, molto seriamente”, e ha aggiunto che, dicendolo pubblicamente, sperava fornisse a lui e agli altri operatori comunitari “un certo grado di sicurezza”.
Gerry Kelly, ministro junior dello Sinn Fein, ha descritto la minaccia come “una vergogna” e ha detto che deve essere ritirata.
Per il parlamentare shinner il gruppo che si definisce Republican Network for Unity (RNU) dovrebbe spiegare le azioni di Oglaigh na hEireann.
“Ora ci hanno riferito che Carl Reilly, il portavoce di RNU, sta dicendo che RNU si sta allineando a questa organizzazione” ha spiegato Gerry Kelly.
“Allora lui si fa avanti per spiegare tali azioni alla gente?”
Fonti repubblicane “mainstream” (i membri e sostenitori dello Sinn Fein, Ndt) e di sicurezza credono che Reilly sia una figura di primo piano di Oglaigh na hEireann.
Reilly è presidente nazionale del Republican Network for Unity.
Contattato dal Belfast Telegraph, Reilly ha detto che RNU la scorsa settimana ha mandato “saluti camerateschi” a Oglaigh na hEireann.
Ma ha aggiunto che RNU non è l’ala politica del gruppo repubblicano.
“Non parliamo e non spieghiamo le azioni di Oglaigh na hEireann” ha affermato.
“Questa è una questione di tale organizzazione. RNU condanna qualsiasi minaccia contro i repubblicani in quanto gioca solo a favore degli inglesi”, ha proseguito.
Parlando ai giornalisti nella giornata di ieri, Seamus Finucane spiegato che parte del suo ruolo nel lavoro di sicurezza comunitaria è quello di “intervenire in favore dei giovani che sono a rischio dai gruppi armati”.
“Se questa è la ragione per cui sono stato minacciato, non mi scoraggerà sicuramente dal soddisfare la mia responsabilità verso la comunità,” ha detto.
Ha inoltre invitato Carl Reilly a spiegare la minaccia di Oglaigh na hEireann, che ha descritto come “molto vaga”.
Una fonte della leadership di Oglaigh na hEireann ha riferito al Belfast Telegraph: “Questo uomo non è in pericolo – non lo è mai stato.
“E la domanda che dobbiamo porci è: perché Seamus credere che la dichiarazione sia diretta contro di lui?”
Ma un’altra fonte dei repubblicani mainstream ritiene che la minaccia sia stata fatta contro Seamus Finucane e che la fonte di tale minaccia sia nota.
Dissidents deny issuing death threat to Belfast republican
In a series of statements yesterday mainstream and dissident republicans engaged in an angry war of words.
At the heart of the story is the issue of community co-operation with the PSNI.
In recent days Oglaigh na hEireann warned it would not tolerate “acts of treachery” — meaning any information passed to police that could lead to the arrest of its members.
The statement did not name individuals, but the PSNI later warned Seamus Finucane, a one-time senior IRA figure now involved in community safety work in west Belfast, that his life was under threat.
He said he was treating the matter “very, very seriously”, and added that, by going public, he hoped it would provide him and other community workers with “a degree of security”.
Sinn Fein junior minister Gerry Kelly described the threat as “an absolute disgrace” and said it should be withdrawn.
He said the group calling itself Republican Network for Unity (RNU) should explain the actions of Oglaigh na hEireann.
“We are now told that Carl Reilly, who is the spokesperson for RNU, is saying that RNU are aligning themselves to this organisation,” Gerry Kelly said.
“Then let him come out? and explain these actions to the people.”
Mainstream republican and security sources believe Reilly is a senior figure in Oglaigh na hEireann.
He is national chairperson of Republican Network for Unity.
Contacted by the Belfast Telegraph, Reilly said that last week RNU sent “comradely greetings” to Oglaigh na hEireann.
He said that did not mean RNU are the political wing.
“We don’t speak for or explain the actions of Oglaigh na hEireann,” he said.
“That is a matter for that organisation. RNU denounces any threat against any republican as it only plays into the hands of the British,” he said.
Speaking to reporters yesterday, Seamus Finucane explained that part of his role in community safety work is “to intervene on behalf of young people who are at risk from armed groups”.
“If this is the reason why I am being threatened, it will definitely not deter me from fulfilling my responsibility to the community,” he said.
He also called on Carl Reilly to explain the Oglaigh na hEireann threat, which he described as “very vague”.
An Oglaigh na hEireann leadership source told this newspaper: “This man is not under threat — never has been.
“And the question must be asked, why would Seamus believe that statement is directed towards him?”
But a mainstream republican source said a threat had been made against Seamus Finucane and that the source of that threat is known.
