Kevin McGuigan murder: Three men arrested in Belfast by detectives probing fatal shooting
Senior Belfast republican Bobby Storey was among the three arrested on Wednesday morning
Three men have been arrested in Belfast this morning by detectives probing the murder of Kevin McGuigan.
Detectives from Serious Crime Branch arrested a 59-year-old man, a 45-year-old man and a 58-year-old man in Belfast this morning, Wednesday, September 9.
Senior Belfast republican Bobby Storey is one of the three men arrested by police this morning. Mr Storey is northern chairman of Sinn Fein. Senior republicans Eddie Copeland and Brian Gillen have been named as the other two men arrested this morning.
Sinn Fein MLA Martin McGuinness said he was surprised to learn about Mr Storey’s arrest this morning.
“I was surprised to learn about the arrest this morning of our six-county party chair Bobby Storey,” said Mr McGuinness.
“Bobby Storey is a valued member of Sinn Féin’s core leadership.
“He has played a leading role in the development of Sinn Féin’s peace strategy and is a long standing and loyal supporter, defender and advocate of the peace and political processes.
“We look forward with confidence to his early release.”
Detective Chief Inspector John McVea said: “The three males are currently assisting officers at the Serious Crime Suite at Antrim Police Station.”
The arrests took place in North and West Belfast. There have been a total of 16 arrests in connection with this investigation to date with one person being charged in connection to Mr McGuigan’s death. All others were questioned and released unconditionally.

Mr McGuigan was shot dead in front of his wife Dolores outside their home in Comber Court in the republican Short Strand last month.
Detectives said the Action Against Drugs group carried out the murder along with members of the Provisional IRA.
