Il gruppo paramilitare dell’ IRA (Irish Republican Army) si è accollato la responsabilità per l’omicidio dell’uomo di North Belfast Michael McGibbon avvenuto venerdì scorso.
In una dichiarazione rilasciata martedì, il gruppo ha detto di aver compiuto l’attacco ma che non era intenzione uccidere il trentatreenne tassista.
Il commando IRA hanno sparato tre volte alla gamba dell’uomo in un vicolo di Ardoyne.
Sua moglie Joanne, infermiera, ha cercato di portargli i primi soccorsi prima di essere trasportato in ospedale, dove è morto.
Nella dichiarazione fornita attraverso una parola in codice riconosciuta, l’IRA ha detto che “l’intenzione di questa operazione era una punizione”.
“Tragicamente è avvenuta questa morte”.
L’IRA è il gruppo repubblicano armato più attivo e ha compiuto, negli ultimi anni, vari attacchi armati.
L’organizzazione si era assunta anche la responsabilità per la morte della guardia carceraria Adrian Ismay avvenuta il mese scorso a Belfast. Ismay era morto alcuni giorni dopo l’esplosione di un ordigno posizionato sotto al suo furgone.
Michael McGibbon è stato colpito a morte nella zona di Butler Place ad Ardoyne, North Belfast.
Si è appreso che il giorno prima dell’agguato aveva ricevuto la visita a casa da parte di due uomini a volto coperto che gli avevano intimato di lasciare l’abitazione altrimenti sarebbero tornati.
Alban Maginness, parlamentare SDLP, ha condannato il gruppo armato repubblicano.
“Questa è una dichiarazione oltraggiosa” ha detto.
“Qui ci sono persone che si sono prese il diritto, senza alcun tipo di mandato, di essere giudici, giuria ed anche carnefici.
“Adesso ammettono di aver eseguito questo atto atroce ma dovrebbero vergognarsi ed essere ampiamente condannati per le loro azioni.
“Chiunque utilizza una pistola per quella che loro definiscono una punizione rischia di commettere un omicidio e non solo di causare gravi ferite.
“Con quest’azione si sono portati via la vita di un giovane uomo, senza essere in alcun modo legittimati”.

Murder of Michael McGibbon: ‘IRA’ claims responsibility
THE paramilitary group known as the ‘IRA’ has claimed responsibility for killing north Belfast man Michael McGibbon.
In a statement on Tuesday, it said it carried out the shooting that claimed the 33-year-old taxi driver’s life but the intention was not to kill him.
The father-of-four died after he was shot three times in the leg in an alleyway in Ardoyne on Friday.
It is believed his wife Joanne, a nurse, fought to save him before he was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital where he later died.
In a statement using a recognised codeword, the ‘IRA’ said “the intention of this operation was to carry out a punishment shooting”.
“Tragically this resulted in his death.”
The ‘IRA’ is the most active of the republican paramilitary groups and has carried out a series of gun and bomb attacks in recent years.
The organisation also claimed responsibility for killing prison officer Adrian Ismay in east Belfast last month, who died days after a bomb exploded under his van.
Mr McGibbon was shot at an alleyway at Butler Place on Friday.
It is understood he was visited by two masked men at his home a day earlier who warned him they would be back when he refused to leave the house.
North Belfast SDLP assembly member Alban Maginness condemned the paramilitary group.
“This is an outrageous statement,” he said.
“Here are people who have given themselves, without mandate whatsoever, the right to be judge, jury and indeed executioner.
“They are now admitting they carried out this heinous act and they should be ashamed of themselves and should be widely condemned for their actions.
“Anybody who uses a gun to carry out what they term some sort of punishment shooting is risking not just serious injury but life.
“With this action they ended this young man’s life and did so without any legitimate authority.”
