La vedova dell’avvocato assassinato accusa il governo di prendere tempo
Geraldine Finucane, moglie dell’avvocato assassinato, afferma che il Segretario di Stato Owen Paterson in precedenza aveva detto di essere vicino ad una decisione sul caso, ma adesso la questione è stata nuovamente rimandata senza alcuna spiegazione.
L’esercito, la polizia e i servizi di intelligence sono stati implicati nell’omicidio del 1989, eseguito dai paramilitari lealisti. Tra di loro anche agenti delle forze di sicurezza.
In una mossa a sorpresa, era emerso a gennaio che Paterson aveva iniziato dei colloqui con la famiglia Finucane nel tentativo di mettere la parola fine ad un caso che si protrae da molto tempo.
Ma la signora Finucane ha affermato: “Il Segretario di Stato, Owen Paterson, mi ha detto a marzo di quest’anno che avrebbe preso la sua decisione dopo le elezioni per l’Assemblea nordirlandese [a maggio] perché era alle fasi conclusive”.
Si è detta dispiaciuta per la gestione della questione e ha accusato Paterson di non aver mantenuto “la sua promessa”.
Il Segretario di Stato, tuttavia, ha ripetutamente affermato di voler lavorare fianco a fianco con la famiglia nel tracciare la via da seguire.
Ma la vedova Finucane prosegue: “Sono molto infelice perché non è stata fornita alcuna ragione per questo ritardo.
“Né una lettera né un contatto è stato avuto con i rappresentanti legali della famiglia e neppure con me, per informarci che la decisione era stata rinviata e sarebbe stata affrontata dopo il recesso della Casa dei Comuni”.
Un portavoce del Northern Ireland Office si giustifica: “Il Segretario di Stato si rammarica perché sta impiegando più tempo del previsto, ma è una questione complessa”.

Murdered solicitor’s widow accuses Government of stalling on decision
The murdered lawyer’s widow, Geraldine Finucane, said that Secretary of State Owen Paterson had earlier this year promised he was close to a decision on the case, but she said the issue had now been delayed without proper explanation.
The Army, police and intelligence service have been implicated in the 1989 murder, which was carried out by loyalist paramilitaries who included security force agents among their ranks.
In a surprise move, it emerged in January that Mr Paterson had initiated talks with the bereaved family in a bid to bring closure to the long-running case.
But Mrs Finucane said: “The Secretary of State, Owen Paterson, told me in March this year that he would make his decision after the Northern Ireland Assembly elections [in May] as he was in the final stages of taking that decision.”
She said she was disappointed by his handling of the issue and accused Mr Paterson of failing to keep “his promise”.
The Secretary of State, however, has repeatedly said he wants to work closely with the family as he charts the way forward.
But Mrs Finucane said: “I am also very unhappy that no reason has been provided to me for this delay.
“Neither correspondence nor contact has been made to the family’s legal representative or me informing us that the decision has been put back and will be dealt with after the House of Commons recess.”
A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Office said: “The Secretary of State regrets that this has taken longer than expected, but it is a complex issue.”
