Ieri la polizia ha fermato un cinquantunenne soprannomicato “Il chirurgo” per l’omicidio del 2005
Il cinquantunenne, soprannominato “Il chirurgo” (The Surgeon), è stato arrestato mercoledì nei pressi del confine irlandese in collegamento con uno degli omicidi più controversi del post-cessate-il-fuoco in Irlanda del Nord.
Durante gli ultimi anni dei Troubles è diventato il secondo in comando della brigata di South Armagh, dopo il leader Thomas “Slab” Murphy.
Il repubblicano di South Armagh è stato interrogato sul ruolo dell’IRA nell’intimidazione dei testimoni e nell’ostacolare le indagini della polizia sull’omicidio avvenuto nel 2005 all’esterno di un pub nel centro di Belfast. Non vi è alcun suggerimento che “Il chirurgo” fosse presente la notte dell’uccisione, ma invece è messa in discussione dagli investigatori il ruolo della leadership dell’IRA nell’inchiesta interna sull’omicidio McCartney.
L’uomo fermato è stato trattenuto mercoledì nella zona di Jonesborough, quindi trasferito nella Serious Crime Suite della stazione di polizia di Antrim per gli interrogatori.
L’omicidio avvenuto all’esterno del Magennis Bar, di fronte al Palazzo di Giustizia a Belfast, provocò una crisi nel processo di pace dopo che emerse il coinvolgimento dei membri locali di una unità dell’IRA nell’uccisione e nell’insabbiamento delle indagini forensi. Un certo numero di testimoni oculari sono stati intimiditi, facendoli desistere da cooperare con le indagini della polizia.
McCartney, proveniente dal quartiere di Short Strand, è morto dopo essere stato picchiato e accoltellato vicino al bar. Lo Sinn Féin è stato accusato dalle sorelle McCartney di ostruzione alla giustizia e di impedire ai testimoni oculari di parlare.
Le sorelle McCartney hanno lanciato una campagna di alto profilo per portare gli assassini del fratello alla giustizia e hanno ottenuto il sostegno di molti simpatizzanti tra cui George W. Bush e Ted Kennedy.
La campagna ha portato le sorelle McCartney dalle strade di Short Strand alla Casa Bianca fino alla conferenza annuale dello Sinn Féin a Dublino. Continuano a sostenere che i repubblicani continuano a dissuadere le persone a fornire i nomi delle persone coinvolte.
Dopo l’inchiesta interna l’IRA espulse tre membri ed in seguito lo Sinn Féin sospese sette dei suoi membri. Tuttavia altri membri dello Sinn Féin che si trovavano nel bar la sera del delitto sono poi stati promossi all’interno del partito. Uno di loro sarebbe una stella nascente nell’organizzazione.
Nel 2008 Terence Davison fu assolto dall’accusa di aver partecipato all’omicidio McCartney, mentre altre due persone hanno visto decadere le accuse legate all’uccisione.

51-year-old man nicknamed ‘The Surgeon’ is arrested near Irish border over 2005 killing outside Belfast pub
The 51-year-old man, nicknamed “The Surgeon”, was arrested near the Irish border on Wednesday in connection with one of the most controversial killings of the post-ceasefire era in Northern Ireland.
During the latter years of the Troubles he became the second in command to the IRA’s south Armagh leader Thomas “Slab” Murphy.
The south Armagh republican is still being quizzed over the IRA’s role in allegedly intimidating witnesses and hampering the police investigation into the 2005 murder outside a central Belfast pub. There is no suggestion he was present on the night of the killing but instead is being questioned by detectives over the IRA leadership’s role in an internal inquiry into the McCartney murder.
He was detained in the Jonesborough area of south Armagh on Wednesday in relation to the murder in 2005 of the Belfast father of two. He has been taken to the Antrim serious crimes suite for questioning.
The murder outside Magennis’s bar facing the law courts in Belfast provoked a crisis in the peace process after it emerged that local members of an IRA unit were involved in the killing and the forensic cover-up of the crime inside the pub afterwards. A number of eyewitnesses were also intimidated from co-operating with the police investigation.
McCartney, from the Short Strand district of the city, died after being beaten and stabbed near the bar. Sinn Féin was accused by McCartney’s sisters of obstructing justice and preventing eyewitnesses from speaking out.
The McCartney sisters launched a high-profile campaign to bring their brother’s killers to justice and won support from sympathisers including George W Bush and Ted Kennedy in the US.
The sisters also organised a high-profile campaign that took them from the streets of the working-class nationalist Short Strand to the White House, and to Sinn Féin’s annual conference in Dublin. McCartney’s sisters have alleged that mainstream republicans continue to dissuade people with direct information about the killers from naming names.
The IRA expelled three members over the murder and Sinn Féin subsequently suspended seven of its members. However, a number of other Sinn Féin members who were in the bar on the night of the murder have subsequently been promoted within the party, one of whom is a rising star in the organisation.
In 2008, Terence Davison, then 51, was acquitted of McCartney’s murder and two other men were cleared of charges connected to the killing.
