L’ex numero uno della Continuity IRA è stato ucciso in pieno giorno nel complesso Peter Pan in Springfield Road, a West Belfast, alle 16:45 di venerdì.
Un ventiseienne è stato arrestato a West Belfast e trasferito nella Serious Crime Suite della stazione PSNI di Antrim. (L’uomo è stato rilasciato in seguito, Ndt)
Sabato la polizia ha rivelato che Tommy Crossan stava lavorando nel deposito di carburante di un amico di famiglia quando gli hanno sparato diverse volte da distanza ravvicinata attraverso la finestra di un piccolo ufficio portatile.
Il repubblicano è stato colpito alla parte superiore del corpo ed è deceduto sul luogo dell’attacco.
Ufficiali PSNI hanno detto che Tommy Crossan – proveniente da West Belfast, che lascia moglie, sei figli e cinque nipoti – era noto alla polizia e non viene escluso la faida interna repubblicana tra le cause del suo assassinio.
L’investigatore Jonathan Roberts ha detto che nulla giustifica questo attacco “spietato” e “brutale”.
Ha continuato: “L’omicidio del signor Crossan in Springfield Road ieri (l’articolo originale è di sabato, ndt) è stato un attacco brutale e spietato che non ha posto nella società.
“Il signor Crossan era noto alla polizia, ma non importa quale fosse il suo stile di vita, assolutamente nulla giustifica questa azione barbarica contro di lui. La polizia sta lavorando su una serie di linee di indagine”.
Parenti di Tommy Crossan e una grande folla di curiosi si sono riuniti sulla scena dell’omicidio mentre gli agenti della PSNI transennavano l’area.
Squadre di agenti stanno ancora indagando sulla scena del crimine, però Lower Springfield Road è stata riaperta.
Una BMW rossa, che è stata data alle fiamme nella vicina Beechmount Grove, è stata scoperta dopo l’attacco armato e viene cercato un collegamento con l’omicidio.
Il soprintendente Jonathan Roberts ha detto: “Una BMW di colore rosso, che si ritiene collegata all’omicidio, è stata trovata incendiata poco tempo dopo nella zona di Beechmount Grove.
“Non ci sono segnalazioni di furto giunte alla polizia, tuttavia il veicolo è stato notato diverse volte nella zona nelle ultime settimane.
“Siamo particolarmente interessati a parlare con chiunque abbia visto la BMW rossa, targata OEZ 9177, lasciare la zona al momento dell’omicidio o con chi può averla vista in seguito in Beechmount Grove”.
C’è stata una diffusa condanna politica dopo l’assassinio, guidata dal Primo e dal Vice Primo Ministro, che hanno rilasciato una dichiarazione congiunta.
Peter Robinson, DUP, ha dichiarato: “La piccola minoranza di persone che vogliono continuare a terrorizzare la comunità ha bisogno di capire che non gli sarà permesso di trascinare l’Irlanda del Nord indietro ai giorni bui del passato. Devono essere catturati e portati davanti alla giustizia”.
Martin McGuinness, Sinn Féin, ha dichiarato: “Le persone responsabili di questo omicidio sono criminali e non otterranno nulla attraverso questo attacco. Il processo di pace è solido come una roccia e tutte le persone giuste in questa comunità contrastano e respingono le azioni di chi sta dietro questo omicidio”.
La polizia ha detto di aver istituito una sala operativa per indagare sull’omicidio e ha fatto appello per ottenere informazioni.
Il soprintendente Jonathan Roberts ha aggiunto: “I responsabili di questo omicidio spietato saranno portati davanti ai tribunali e messi dietro le sbarre solo se le persone che hanno informazioni lavoreranno con la polizia”.

Murdered dissident ‘shot through window’
Police have said west Belfast murder victim Tommy Crossan was working at a family business and was shot a number of times through the window of a portable cabin when he was attacked by gunmen on Friday afternoon.
The 43-year-old former senior Continuity IRA figure was gunned down in broad daylight in the Peter Pan complex on the Springfield Road at 4.45pm.
A 26-year-old man has been arrested in west Belfast by police investigating the murder and is being questioned at Antrim Serious Crime Suite.
Police on Saturday revealed that Tommy Crossan was working at the fuel depot business of a family friend, sitting in a portable cabin office when he was shot through the window a number of times at close range.
He was hit in the upper body and pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers said Mr Crossan – who is from west Belfast and leaves behind a wife, six children and five grandchildren – was known to police and they have not ruled out a dissident republican feud in relation to his murder.
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Superintendent Jonathan Roberts said nothing justifies this “ruthless” and “brutal” attack.
He continued: “The murder of Mr Crossan on the Springfield Road yesterday was a brutal and ruthless attack which has no place in society.
“Mr Crossan was known to police but no matter what his lifestyle was, absolutely nothing justifies this barbaric action against him. Police are working on a number of lines of enquiry.”
Relatives and a large crowd of onlookers gathered at the scene of the murder investigation as officers cordoned off the area on Good Friday.
Forensics teams are still investigating the scene of the killing however the Lower Springfield Road has now reopened.
A red BMW car, which was set on fire at nearby Beechmount Grove, was discovered after the fatal shooting and a link is being investigated.
Detective Superintendent Jonathan Roberts said: “A red coloured BMW, believed to be linked to the murder, was found burned out a short time later in the Beechmount Grove area of the city.
“It has not been reported as stolen to the police, however there have been a number of sightings of the vehicle in the area over recent weeks.
“We are particularly appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the red coloured BMW car, registration number OEZ 9177, which was seen leaving the area around the time of the murder or anyone who may have seen it in the Beechmount Grove area later on.”
There has been widespread political condemnation following the murder, led by the First and deputy First Ministers who have issued a joint statement.
Peter Robinson, DUP, said: “The small minority of people who want to continue terrorising the community need to understand that they will not be allowed to drag Northern Ireland back to the dark days of the past. They must be hunted down and brought to justice.”
Martin McGuinness, Sinn Féin, said: “The people behind this killing are criminals and will further no cause through this shooting. The peace process is rock solid and all right thinking people across the community oppose and reject the actions of the people behind this murder.”
Police said they have set up an incident room for the murder and appealed for information.
Detective Superintendent Jonathan Roberts added: “Those responsible for this ruthless murder will only be brought before the courts and put behind bars if people with information work with police.”
