Martedì 17 si sono svolti a Derry i funerali di Seamus “Chang” Coyle, conosciuto attivista dell’Irish Republican Socialist Party (IRSP) ed ex militare dell’Irish National Liberation Army (INLA).
Coyle è morto per cause naturali nello scorso fine settimana. Durante la veglia ed il corteo funebre una bandiera raffigurante la Starry Plough era deposta sulla bara.
Quando il feretro è uscito dall’abitazione in Rosemount Gardens, prima di percorrere la strada fino alla cappella di St. Mary a Creggan e poi verso il City Cemetery, quattro uomini a volto coperto e vestiti di nero sono usciti dalla folla e si sono avvicinati al corteo.
Uno degli uomini imbracciava un fucile automatico ed ha sparato dieci colpi in aria, come saluto paramilitare a Seamus “Chang” Coyle. Quindi il quartetto è scomparso nelle vie cittadine.
Il funerale è quindi proseguito.
Seamus “Chang” Coyle è stato un importante membro dell’INLA e nel 1977 fece parte del picchetto d’onore al funerale di Seamus Costello a Bray.

Shots fired over coffin during Derry funeral
There were reports of shots being fired over a coffin at a funeral in Derry this morning.
Local man Chang Coyle died of natural causes at the weekend and during his wake the Starry Plough flag was displayed over his coffin.
As the coffin emerged from the house in Rosemount Gardens this morning before making its way to St. Mary’s Chapel in Creggan a group of four uniformed and masked men stepped forward.
One of the men held a rifle and fired up to ten shots over the coffin before the group disappeared back into nearby streets.
The funeral then continued on its way.
Seamus ‘Chang’ Coyle was prominent in the INLA and in 1977 was one of the firing party at the funeral of the founder of the Seamus Costello in Bray in 1977.
