Quattro uomini sono stati fermati dalla polizia nel corso delle indagini per alcuni omicidi compiuti dalla UVF a North Belfast
Un quarto uomo è stato fermato nella zona di Antrim.
Sono i primi arresti degli investigatori del Serious Crime Branch della PSNI da quando ha preso il controllo dell’Operazione Ballast, gestita fino allo scorso dicembre dall’Historical Enquiries Team.
L’Operazione Ballast indaga sui crimini compiuti da una banda della Ulster Volunteer Force con base nel quartiere di Mount Vernon, North Belfast.
Venne istituita dopo un duro rapporto pubblicato dall’ex Police Ombudsman Nuala O’Loan, dove si affermò che gli assassini paramilitari lealisti non venivano perseguiti perché agenti di polizia.
La O’Loan si attivò dopo aver ascoltato le affermazioni di Raymond McCord, l’uomo di Belfast il cui figlio, Raymond McCord Junior, fu assassinato dalla UVF nel 1997.
Le indagini della HET hanno portato all’incriminazione di 20 persone su un totale di 23 reati, compresi omicidi e tentati omicidi.
La squadra della PSNI adesso concentra gli sforzi nella risposta ai partenti che hanno perso i loro cari durante i Troubles.
Dopo gli arresti, la polizia afferma che l’Operazione Ballast è “un’indagine vasta e complessa, che proseguirà ancora per molto tempo”.

Four arrested in Operation Ballast
Four men have been arrested by detectives investigating a series of UVF murders in north Belfast as part of Operation Ballast, police said.
A fourth man was later arrested in the Antrim area.
These are the first arrests by Detectives from the Serious Crime Branch since the PSNI took over the running of Operation Ballast from the Historical Enquiries Team last December.
Operation Ballast investigates the crimes of an Ulster Volunteer Force gang based in the Mount Vernon estate in north Belfast.
It was set up after a damning report by former Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman Nuala O’Loan, who claimed the paramilitary killers were protected from prosecution because they were police agents.
Ms O’Loan examined the allegations on the back of a complaint by Belfast man Raymond McCord, whose son, Raymond McCord Junior, was murdered by the UVF in 1997.
The HET investigations have led to 20 people being either charged or reported to the Public Prosecution Service for a total of 23 offences including murder and attempted murder.
The HET is now concentrating its efforts on helping to answer questions for families who lost loved ones during the Troubles.
Following the arrests, police said Operation Ballast was “a large and complex investigation which will continue for a considerable time.”
