Figure di rilievo della Gran Loggia dell’Orange Order hanno incontrato Richard Haass a Belfast
La delegazione era guidata dal Gran Maestro dell’Orange Order in Irlanda, Edward Stevenson.
Nella delegazione erano presenti il Gran Segretario Drew Nelson; il Vice Gran Maestro Reveverendo Alistair Smyth; l’Assistente Gran Maestro Raymond Spiers e il Direttore dei Servizi dell’Istituzione, il dottor David Hume.
Gli orangisti hanno presentato ad Haass e al vice presidente dei colloqui tra i partiti, il professor Meghan O’Sullivan, una presentazione preliminare delle parate.
Stevenson ha descritto l’incontro di un’ora come “molto cordiale” e un “esercizio estremamente vantaggioso”.
Ha poi aggiunto: “Siamo lieti di continuare il nostro impegno con il dottor Haass e la sua squadra – insieme con gli altri Ordini liealisti e con la più ampia famiglia unionista – nelle prossime settimane”.
Dopo l’incontro con il diplomatico statunitense Haass,il Vice Gran Maestro Reverendo Alistair Smyth ha detto che le proposte di alternativa alla Commissione Parate, proposte tre anni fa dal gruppo di lavoro DUP/Sinn Féin erano “troppo complicate”.
Parlando fuori dall’Europa Hotel, il reverendo Smyth ha affermato: “Ci sono stati varie ragioni per cui quelle proposte non sono andate avanti, tra cui la loro natura estremamente complicata.
“Perciò per quanto riguarda quello che poi dovrà succedere, stiamo iniziando a costruire da zero per arrivare a qualcosa che sarà accettabile per i nostri membri”.
Ha detto che i colloqui con il dottor Haass e il suo team sono stati “costruttivi” e incentrati esclusivamente con l’emissione di parate. Hanno in programma di incontrarsi di nuovo per discutere le questioni sulle bandiere e sul passato.
Il reverento Smyth ha anche chiesto la rimozione della Commissione Parate, affermando che “se ne deve assolutamente andare”.

HAASS-TA LA RESCUE TALKS: US DIPLOMAT MEETS ORANGE ORDER LEADERSHIP
SENIOR figures within the Grand Lodge of the Orange Order have met with Richard Haass in Belfast.
The delegation was led by the Grand Master of the Orange Order in Ireland Edwards Stevenson.
Also on the delegation were: Grand Secretary Drew Nelson; Deputy Grand Master Rev Alistair Smyth; Assistant Grand Master Raymond Spiers and the Institution’s Director of Services, Dr David Hume.
The Orangemen presented Dr Haass and vice chair of the inter-party talks, Prof Meghan O’Sullivan, with a preliminary submission on parading.
Mr Stevenson described the one-hour meeting as “very cordial” and an “extremely beneficial exercise”.
He added: “We look forward to continuing our engagement with Dr Haass and his team – along with the other Loyal Orders and wider Unionist family – over the coming weeks.”
After meeting the US diplomat Dr Haass, the order’s deputy Grand Master Rev Alistair Smyth said the proposals for an alternative Parades Commission, put forward by a DUP/Sinn Féin working group three years ago were “too complicated.”
Speaking outside the Europa Hotel, Rev Smyth said: “There were various reasons why those proposals did not go forward, including the whole complicated nature of them.
“Therefore with regard to what eventually does happen we are starting as it were from ground zero and building up to arrive at something that will be acceptable to our membership.”
He said the talks with Dr Haass and his team were “constructive” and dealth solely with the issue of parades. They plan to meet again to discuss the issues of flags and the past.
Rev Smyth also called for the removal of the Parades Commission saying it “must absolutely go.”
