Il leader dell’UUP Tom Elliott ed il ministro per lo Sviluppo Regionale Danny Kenedy devono affrontare la denuncia portata avanti dalla loggia di Sandy Row per aver partecipato al funerale di Ronan Kerr a maggio.
Kerr venne ucciso da una bomba posizionata sotto alla sua vettura, esplosa davanti alla sua casa di Omagh ad aprile.
Il funerale si è svolto a Beragh. Vi hanno aprtecipato centinaia di persone da ogni comunità, con giocatori e membri del GAA accanto agli agenti della PSNI.
Elliott e Kennedy sono membri dell’Orange Order, il cui regolamento vieta la partecipazione alle messe cattoliche.
Tom Elliott è stato Gran Maestro di Fermanagh, mentre Danny Kennedy è un importante membro di Armagh.
La lettera di denuncia sarebbe stata scritta dalla St. Simon’s Church Total Abstinence LOL 821 di Sandy Row. Nella missiva si affermava che i due politici “hanno venduto i propri principi per un’espediente politico”.
Il Belfast Telegraph ha appreso che la denuncia verrà affrontata a livello di Contea durante i prossimi incontri a Fermanagh e Armagh, probabilmente ad inizio del prossimo mese.
Tuttavia un portavoce dell’Orange Order afferma: “La procedura di denuncia interna all’istituzione è una questione privata”.
In una dichiarazione dell’UUP si osserva come i due membri “lavorino per costruire un futuro migliore per tutti”.
“Nel suo ruolo come membro della PSNI, Ronan Kerr stava interpretando la sua parte nel lavorare per tale futuro e tristemente ha perso la vita mentre lo stava facendo”, prosegue la dichiarazione.
Mentre l’Orange Order mantiere la regola secondo cui i membri non possono partecipare alle messe cattoliche, nessuno sarebbe mai stato punito formalmente per averlo fatto.
La loggia di Sandy Row è stata l’unica delle 1.200 presenti sul suolo irlandese a sporgere denuncia contro Elliott e Kennedy per la partecipazione al funerale.
Orange Order summons UUP pair over funeral for Catholic PSNI officer
UUP leader Tom Elliott and Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy are the subject of a complaint made by a Sandy Row lodge after attending Constable Ronan Kerr’s funeral in May.
Mr Kerr was killed after a booby-trap car bomb exploded at his home in Omagh in April this year.
The funeral in his home town of Beragh was attended by hundreds from across the political divide, and saw GAA members standing with the PSNI.
Mr Elliott and Mr Kennedy are both involved in the Orange Order, which forbids its members from attending Catholic mass.
Mr Elliott is a former County Grand Master of Fermanagh, while Mr Kennedy is a prominent member in Armagh.
It is believed St Simon’s Church Total Abstinence LOL 821 from Sandy Row has written a letter of complaint, stating the senior UUP men “have sold their principles for political expediency” and “should have known better”.
The Belfast Telegraph understands the complaint will be dealt with at County Grand Lodge level at the next Fermanagh and Armagh meetings, which could be as early as next month.
However, an Orange Order spokesman said: “The complaint procedure within the Orange Institution is a private matter.”
A statement from the UUP said party members “work to build a better future for all”.
“In his role as a member of the PSNI, Ronan Kerr was playing his part in working towards that better future and sadly he lost his life in doing so,” the statement said.
While the Orange Order holds the rule that members may not attend Catholic services, it is believed that no-one has ever been formally disciplined for doing so.
The lodge is the only one out of 1,200 in Northern Ireland and the Republic to complain about Mr Elliott and Mr Kennedy’s attendance at the funeral.
