Le richieste agli orangisti di marciare lontano da Garvaghy Road sono state etichettate come “di nessun aiuto” dai membri della Loggia.
L’Orange Order risponde a Jackie McDonald, che ha sostenuto di non esserci motivo per cui gli Orangisti devono marciare lungo percorsi nazionalisti.
“Potrebbe essere tradizione e potrebbe essere cultura ma perché dovete farlo?” ha affermato il brigadiere UDA al Belfast Telegraph nell’intervista di ieri.
Il commento di McDonald giunge mentre il gruppo di lavoro sulle parate, composto da DUP e Sinn Fein, continua a lottare per cercare una soluzione al problema, e prima dell’incontro straordinario dell’Orange Order Grand Lodge di domani, il cui unico argomento all’ordine del giorno saranno le parate.
In una dichiarazione rilasciata ieri sera, un portavoce dell’Orange Order ha detto: “I commenti di McDonald non sono di alcun aiuto al momento”.
Secondo il consigliere del DUP e orangista da lungo tempo, John Finlay, entrambe le parti possono essere accomodate durante la stagione delle marce.
“Ho pensato che questo paese sta cercando di andare avanti, dove entrambe le tradizioni possono essere sistemate”, ha detto.
“Tutto quello che chiediamo è di camminare per le strade della Regina e se non possiamo farlo allora non c’è alcun futuro condiviso. Se Jackie McDonald sta dicendo che ci sono alcune strade per alcune persone, allora seguiamo una strada sbagliata. Se tutti paghiamo le tasse e le bollette, entrambe le parti devono essere accolte”.
McDonald ha anche attaccato il trionfalismo delle marce attraverso le zone più calde e ha sostenuto che gli orangisti decisi a percorrere certe strade “prendono un vantaggio” sull’altra comunità.
Il parlamentare dell’Ulster Unionist Tom Elliott, membro della Knockmanoul LOL 443 a Fermanagh per quasi 30 anni, ha respinto le dichiarazioni di McDonald.
“Non accetto quei commenti, non si tratta di prendere un vantaggio sull’altra comunità e non lo è mai stato.
“Voglio chiedere a Jackie McDonald il suo livello di conoscenza nel fare queste valutazioni.
“Sta quasi facendo il lavoro di cui parla per conto dello Sinn Fein.
“Sta certamente seguendo la loro agenda”.
UDA man’s comments unhelpful: Orange Order
Calls for Orangemen to walk away from the Garvaghy Road have been branded “unhelpful’’ by Lodge members.
The Order hit back after loyalist leader Jackie McDonald claimed there was no point in Orangemen walking down nationalist routes.
“It might be tradition and it might be culture but why would you?” the UDA ‘brigadier’ told the Belfast Telegraph in an interview yesterday.
McDonald’s comments come as the Sinn Fein/DUP working group continues to struggle to find a solution to the parading issue, and ahead of tomorrow’s special meeting of the Orange Order Grand Lodge where the only item on the agenda will be parading.
In a statement issued last night a spokesman for the Orange Order said: “Mr McDonald’s comments are not helpful at this time.”
DUP councillor and long-standing north Antrim Orangeman John Finlay said both sides must be accommodated during the marching season.
“I would have thought that this country was trying to move forward where both traditions can be accommodated,” he said.
“All we are asking is to walk down the Queen’s highway and if we can’t do that then there is no shared future. If Jackie McDonald is saying that there are certain roads for certain people then we are in a bad way. If we all pay our taxes and pay rates, both sides need to be accommodated.”
McDonald also attacked the triumphalism of marches through contentious areas and claimed Orangemen wanted to walk certain routes to “get one up” on the other community.
Ulster Unionist MLA Tom Elliott, a member of Knockmanoul LOL 443 in Fermanagh for almost 30 years, denied the claims.
“I don’t accept those comments, it is not to get one up on the other community and never has been.
“I would question Jackie McDonald’s level of knowledge in making these assessments.
“He is almost doing the work that he’s talking about in that for Sinn Fein.
“ He is certainly playing to their agenda.”
