Orange Order: intensificare le proteste a Twaddell, Belfast

Orange to ‘upscale’ protests at Twaddell

Orange Order

A senior Orangeman in north Belfast has pledged that protests at the Twaddell/Ardoyne interface will be stepped up.

William Mawhinney, secretary of the Grand Orange Lodge of Belfast, told a crowd of several hundred people at Woodvale on Saturday that the protests would be “up-scaled… right up to civil disobedience if that’s what it takes”.

Politicians, including DUP minister Nelson McCausland, flanked Mr Mawhinney as he spoke.

His party colleague Arlene Foster told the BBC: “I know that Nelson will have been there, and he will have been exercising his right, but he will also have been exercising his responsibility…he will have been bringing calm to the area and talking to people to make sure that things did not get out of hand and I very much defend the right of Nelson to be there.”

Mrs Foster defended the right to peaceful protest but stressed that no one should break the law. She highlighted that young people who broke the law during the flag protests now have a criminal conviction.
