Orange Order: no alla visita del Papa

L’Orange Order chiede ai suoi membri di opporsi alla visita del Papa in Gran Bretagna

In un comunicato rilasciato mercoledì, l’istituzione orangista ha anche chiesto ai suoi membri di opporsi a qualsiasi invito al Papa di visitare l’Irlanda del Nord.

Quella di Papa Benedetto XVI sarà la prima visita nel Regno Unito dopo quella del 1982 di Giovanni Paolo II.

Il pontefice sta pianificando degli incontri in Scozia ed Inghilterra per metà settembre, dopo essere stato formalmente invitato dal primo ministro Gordon Brown e dal Segretario di Stato scozzese Jim Murphy.

L’Orange Order afferma di non poter “accogliere positivamente o essere d’accordo con la visita del Papa in questo paese.

“Pertanto chiediamo a tutti i cittadini del Regno Unito, e specialmente ai membri del Loyal Order Institution, di dimostrare la propria opposizione alla visita del Papa in Inghilterra e Scozia, e di opporsi a qualsiasi visita, anche futura, in Irlanda del Nord”.

Order urges ‘opposition’ to papal visit

The Orange Order has called on its members to demonstrate their opposition to the Pope’s visit to Britain.

In a statement released on Wednesday the institution also called on members to oppose any future invitation for the Pope to visit Northern Ireland.

Pope Benedict XVI’s trip will be the first papal visit to the UK since John Paul II in 1982.

The Pontiff is due to fulfil a series of engagements in Scotland and England in mid-September, after having been formally invited by Prime Minister Gordon Brown last February and Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy.

In the statement the Orange Order said that they could not “welcome or agree with the visit of the Pope to this country.

“We therefore call on all the citizens of the UK, and especially members of the Loyal Orange Institution, to demonstrate their opposition to the Pope’s visit to England and Scotland, and to oppose any future invitation to visit Northern Ireland.”
