Orange Order: primo evento a Stormont per centenario Ulster Covenant

Stormont ospiterà la parata della Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland per il centenario per la firma dell’Ulster Covenant

È la prima volta a memoria d’uomo che nel complesso di Stormont sarà ospitato un evento formale dell’Orange Order.

La parata, per commemorare l’alleanza che si oppose alla Home Rule in Irlanda, inizierà nel centro di Belfast per terminare con un raduno a Stormont.

L’approvazione per l’utilizzo della proprietà da parte della Grand Orange Lodge è stata data dal ministro delle Finanze Sammy Wilson.

Il Comitato per il centenario vorrebbe posizionare il palco per i discorsi accanto alla statua di Sir Edward Carson di fronte all’edificio del Parlamento, sede della Northern Ireland Assembly.

In un comunicato, il Ministero delle Finanze e del Personale (DFP) ha detto che l’autorizzazione è stata concessa “con riserva per le modalità ed i documenti rilevanti in relazione alla manifestazione da concordare con la Estate Management Unit e le altre autorità competenti”.

David McNarry, parlamentare, membro del Comitato del centenario ed ex assistente del Gran Maestro della Grand Orange Lodge, ha detto che l’evento di Stormont sarà uno sviluppo storico.

Parlando durante il programma Talkback su BBC Radio Ulster, il parlamentare di Strangford ha affermato: “Ritengo che siamo cresciuti come democratici e come politici”.

“Abbiamo raggiunto una fase della nostra vita politica, dove siamo passati ad essere in grado di rispettare le tradizioni e le commemorazioni altrui”, ha detto.

Si è appellato a tutti coloro che si oppongono alla commemorazione a Stormont di non ostacolare il procedimento e di non causare problemi.

L’Ulster Covenant faceva parte della campagna unionista contro le proposte del governo britannico di introdurre la Home Rule in Irlanda.

In totale 237,368 uomini firmarono l’Ulster Covenant alla Belfast City Hall, mentre 234,046 donne siglarono una dichiarazione parallela per opporsi alla Home Rule.

Stormont to host first Orange event for Ulster Covenant

The Stormont estate will host the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland’s Covenant centenary parade later this year.

It is understood to be the first time in living memory that the estate will have hosted a formal Orange event.

The parade, to commemorate the covenant which opposed Home Rule in Ireland, will involve a march from Belfast city centre to a rally at Stormont.

Approval for the Grand Orange Lodge to use the estate has been given by the Finance Minister Sammy Wilson.

The centenary committee plan to have the speaker’s platform next to Sir Edward Carson‘s statue in front of parliament buildings, home of the Northern Ireland Assembly.

In a statement, the Department of Finance and Personnel (DFP) said that permission had been granted “subject to detailed arrangements and relevant paperwork in relation to the event being agreed with the department’s Estate Management Unit and other relevant authorities”.

MLA David McNarry, who is a member of the centenary committee and a former assistant grand master of the Grand Orange Lodge, said that holding the event at Stormont was a historic development.

‘Respect’

Speaking on BBC Radio Ulster’s Talkback programme, the Strangford MLA said: “I think we’ve grown up as democrats and as politicians.”

“I think we have reached a stage in our political lives where we have moved on to be able to respect each others’ traditions and commemorations,” he said.

He appealed to anyone who opposed the commemoration at Stormont not to disrupt proceedings or cause trouble.

The Ulster Covenant formed part of the unionist campaign against British government proposals to introduce Home Rule in Ireland.

In total, 237,368 men signed the covenant at Belfast City Hall, while 234,046 women signed a parallel declaration of their opposition to Home Rule.
