Owen Paterson rimanda decisione su inchiesta per Pat Finucane

Il Segretario di Stato impiegherà altri due mesi per decidere se avviare un’inchiesta pubblica sulla morte di Pat Finucane

L’avvocato fu assassinato da terroristi lealisti nella sua casa di Belfast nel 1989, davanti alla moglie ed ai figli.

La sua famiglia ritiene che la sua morte sia il risultato della collusione tra squadroni della morte lealisti ed elementi delle forze di sicurezza.

Owen Paterson ha affermato che, d’accordo con la famiglia Finucane, si prenderà altro tempo per valutare se l’inchiesta sia di pubblico interesse.

Paterson ha incontrato la famiglia Finucane a novembre. Il Segretariod i Stato deve tenere in considerazione anche altri fatti, compresi i potenziali costi, le precedenti indagini e rapporti sul caso e la possibile durata dell’inchiesta.

Nel 2004, il predecessore di Paterson, Paul Murphy, annunciò la decisione di avviare un’inchiesta in base alla nuova legge chiamata Inquiries Act.

La famiglia Finucane si oppose all’avvio dell’inchiesta sotto a tale legge che, dicono, deve rendere conto al ministro responsabile piuttosto che al parlamento.

Una serie di indagini sono state effettuate seguendo l’ultima legge del governo, tra cui quelle sugli omicidi dell’avvocatessa Rosemary Nelson, di Robert Hamill e del leader di LVF Billy Wright.

Owen Paterson decision on Pat Finucane inquiry delayed

The secretary of state has said he will take another two months to decide if there should be a public inquiry into the murder of Pat Finucane.

The solicitor was shot dead by loyalist terrorists at his Belfast home in 1989.

His family believe that his death was the result of collusion with elements of the security forces.

Owen Paterson said that, with the agreement of the family, he had decided to consult further on whether an inquiry was in the public interest.

Mr Paterson met the Finucane family in November. Afterwards, he said he would be considering a number of matters including potential cost, previous reviews and investigations into the case and the possible length of an inquiry.

In 2004, Mr Paterson’s predecessor Paul Murphy announced his intention to hold an inquiry under the new Inquiries Act.

The Finucane family are opposed to the probe being held under this legislation, which they say makes the inquiry accountable to the minister responsible rather than to parliament.

A number of inquiries have been carried out following the last government’s pledge, including probes into the murders of solicitor Rosemary Nelson, Robert Hamill and LVF leader Billy Wright.
