Il sacerdote passionista Padre Aidan Troy, al centro della controversia della Holy Cross nel 2001, ha parlato di come sia andato a confessarsi a Clonard il giorno dopo aver appreso che la sua vita era in pericolo.
Il sacerdote nato a Bray, che opera in una parrocchia di lingua inglese a Parigi dal settembre 2008, ha detto che un venerdì sera la polizia, a bordo di cinque Land Rover, giunse alla sua porta e gli offrì un trasferimento fino al confine. Un agente di polizia gli disse che avevano informazioni certe che sarebbe stato assassinato quello stesso fine settimana. L’ufficiale si offrì di portarlo fino a Killean, Contea di Armagh, chiedendo se poteva incontrare qualcuno in quella cittadina. Padre Aidan Troy si rifiutò di lasciare la parrocchia, contro il parere della polizia.
“Io non sono andato via perché gli ho detto che «potremmo anche appendere un avviso sulla porta e dire che quest’uomo è sotto minaccia»” ha ricordato Padre Aidan Troy ier su Rté Radio.
“Avevo paura, non tanto per me, ma se la gente lo avesse pensato, magari avrebbero potuto agire di testa loro”.
Padre Aidan Troy ha detto che anche il governo irlandese gli aveva offerto un appartamento a Belfast e un autista per il fine settimana, ma aveva rifiutato. La mattina dopo che gli era stato detto della minaccia di morte, si è andato a confessare al monastero di Clonard a West Belfast.
“Ho detto a me stesso: se devo essere ucciso, avverrà in uno stato di grazia” ha spiegato.
Ha detto che sebbene gli manchi molto Belfast, si sente “riccamente ricompensato” dalle sue esperienze a Parigi. Il sacerdote, insieme a Padre Gary Donegan, nel 2001 aveva quotidianamente aiutato a scortare le studentesse cattoliche della scuola primaria Holy Cross mentre passavano accanto a centinaia di lealisti ostili.
Padre Troy ha detto che l’istruzione rimane una “questione vessata” nel Nord, ma deve essere affrontata.
“Come penso sia dimostrato dalla mia storia, ho messo la mia vita in prima linea per le scuole cattoliche ma non penso sia sufficiente solo dire che educheremo i bambini e quindi andranno a conoscersi l’un l’altro” ha affermato.

Fr Troy – I confessed after threat to kill me
Passionist priest Fr Aidan Troy, who was at the heart of the 2001 Holy Cross dispute, has spoken of how he went to confession in Clonard the day after he learned his life was under threat.
The Bray-born priest, who has worked in an English-speaking parish in Paris since september 2008, said police in five Land Rovers came to his door one Friday night and offered to drive him close to the border. A police officer told him they had intelligence that he would be killed that weekend. The officer offered to take him as far as Killean in Co Armagh and asked if someone could meet him there. He said he refused to leave the parochial house, against police advice.
“I didn’t go because i said to him, ‘we might as well hang a notice on the gate and say this man is under threat’,” Fr troy told RTE Radio one yesterday.
“I was afraid, not so much for myself but if people thought that, they maybe could have decided to take their own action.”
Fr troy said the Irish government also offered him an apartment in Belfast and a driver for the weekend, but he refused. The morning after he was told of the threat, he made a confession at Clonard Monastery in west Belfast.
“I said to myself, if i’m going to be killed, i may as well be in the state of grace,” he said.
He said although he still misses Belfast, he has felt “richly rewarded” by his experiences in Paris. The priest, along with colleague Fr Gary Donegan, helped escort Catholic schoolgirls from Holy Cross Girls Primary past hundreds of hostile loyalists each day in 2001.
Fr Troy said education remains a “vexed question” in the north but is one that must be addressed.
“As i think my record would be fairly clear i put my life on the line for Catholic schools but i don’t think it’s enough just to say we’ll educate the children and then afterwards they’ll get to know one another,” he said.
