Il prete di Ardoyne ha stretto la mano a Dee Fennell dopo essersi incontrati per la serie televisiva di Stephen Nolan, “Story of a Lifetime”
Il prete di Ardoyne padre Gary Donegan ha scambiato la stretta di mano con il repubblicano Dee Fennell dopo il duro confronto che ebbero nel corso di una protesta per il passaggio di una parata unionista per le strade del quartiere nazionalista.
Il prete ha incontrato il membro del GARC (Greater Ardoyne Residents’ Collective, Collettivo dei Residenti di Greater Ardoyne) nel corso della registrazione dsi “Story of a Lifetime”, la serie TV di Stephen Nolan.
I due uomini sono stati portati sul luogo in cui alcune settimane fa Fennell e altri repubblicani contestarono padre Donegan per il suo appoggio all’accordo che permetteva all’Orange Order di marciare lungo Crumlin Road.
Padre Donegan ha detto al Sunday Life: “Lui ha un ricordo differente dal mio – dice che la nostra non fu una conversazione animata.
“Ovviamente ha cercato di difendere quanto fece e sentiva che il mio essere una figura pubblica, un prete, non mi metteva in posizione superiore rispetto a chi aveva un’opinione differente.
“Ho detto che tutti hanno il diritto ad avere un’opinione ma ciò che subii quel giorno lo trovai offensivo, e non perché qualcuno la pensava diversamente da me.
“Lui (Fennell, ndt) ha detto di non essersi sentito aggressivo nei suoi toni ma lo fu, ed è stato documentato.
“Nolan gli ha chiesto se ha visto i filmati dell’accaduto e Fennell ha riposto di averlo fatto alcune volte.
“Ha spiegato che non poteva controllare come la gente parlava con me, ma lui sostiene di averlo fatto in una maniera misurata.
“Non fu esattamente una protesta misurata, lui stava guidando una folla urlante”.
Alla fine della giornata Nolan ha chiesto se padre Donegan fosse pronto a stringere la mano di Dee Fennell, cosa che i due hanno fatto prima di andarsene.
“Ho stretto la mano a persone che fanno molto più paura di Dee Fennell” ha riferito padre Donegan.
Ha quindi aggiunto: “Adesso è finito, sono contento sia avvenuto prima che diventasse qualcosa di troppo grande da gestire, altrimenti le cose sarebbero potute guastarsi seriamente”.
Un portavoce della BBC ha detto che “Stephen Nolan al momento sta girando un film insieme a padre Gary Donegan. I dettagli del progetto saranno rivelati prossimamente”.

Ardoyne priest Father Gary Donegan has shaken hands with Dee Fennell in the wake of their confrontation during a parade protest.
He came face-to-face with the high profile GARC member as part of the Stephen Nolan TV series , Story of a Lifetime.
The pair were brought together at the same spot where weeks earlier Fennell and protesters railed against Fr Donegan for backing a deal to allow Orangemen to march up the Crumlin Road .
Fr Donegan told the Sunday Life: “He had a different recollection of it than I had – he said it wasn’t an animated conversation.
“He was obviously trying to defend what he did and he felt that because I’m a public figure, a priest, it doesn’t put me above somebody having a difference of opinion.
“I said that everybody has a right to an opinion but it was what I was subjected to on the day that I found offensive, not the fact that someone’s opinion was different to mine.
“He said he felt he wasn’t being aggressive in his tone but it’s there and it has been documented.
“Nolan actually asked him if he had watched the footage back and he said he had seen it a few times.
“He said that he couldn’t stand over how other people spoke to me but he felt that he did it in a measured way.
“It wasn’t exactly that most measure thing, he was leading a baying crowd.”
At the end of it Nolan asked if Fr Donegan would be prepared to shake Fennell’s hand, which the pair did before parting.
“I have shaken hands with much scarier people than Dee Fennell,” said Fr Donegan.
He added: “It’s over now, I’m glad it’s happened rather than it become something bigger than what people deemed it to be, otherwise these things fester.”
