McManus, che ha visto Ford a Washington durante l’ultima visita avvenuta in occasione della festa di San Patrizio, ha dato seguito all’incontro con delle lettere incentrate sui due repubblicani.
McManus ha scritto che il caso di Gerry McGeough, come quello della Price, è “un’incredibile perversione della giustizia”.
Scrive McManus: “Ho parlato con legali e con esperti di diritti umani in Irlanda del Nord e nessuno di loro ha trovato alcun senso in questo caso, o perché Gerry sia stato trattato in quel modo.
“E, ancora, la vostra reputazione sta per essere offuscata a causa di questo fatto. Come può questo caso punitivo e vendicativo infondere fiducia nel sistema giudiziario del Nord?”
Per quanto riguarda Marian Price, McManus ha scritto: “La questione umanitaria è, ovviamente, intrinsecamente convincente:. Marian non dovrebbe essere trattata in questo modo disumano. Inoltre, il suo trattamento crudele è un terribile atto d’accusa verso il sistema giudiziario, e un disastro per le relazioni pubbliche del vostro ufficio. Se la misericordia non vi induce a facilitare il suo rilascio, allora dovrebbe essere il buon senso politico e giuridico.
“So che siete un uomo giusto e dignitoso, non dovete lasciare che gli altri vi costringano a passare alla storia come il torturatore di Marian Price”.

McManus appeals for McGeough, Price
McManus, who met Ford in Washington, D.C. during the latter’s visit for St. Patrick’s Day festivities, followed up with letters focusing on both activists.
McManus wrote that the case of Tyrone native Gerry McGeough, as with the Price case, was “an outrageous perversion of justice.”
Wrote McManus: “I have spoken to Northern Ireland legal and human rights experts and none of them can make any sense of this case, or why Gerry was singled out in such an exceptional way.
“And, again, your reputation is going to be tarnished because of this case. How does all this punitive and vindictive stuff instill confidence in the justice system of Northern Ireland?”
With regard to Price, McManus wrote: “The humanitarian issue is, of course, inherently compelling : Marian should not be treated in such a inhumane way. Moreover, her savage treatment is a terrible indictment of the justice system, and a PR disaster for your office. If mercy does not impel you to facilitate her release, then political-legal common sense should.
“I know you are a just and decent man, you should not let others force you to go down in history as the torturer of Marian Price.”
