Un prete di Derry si è offerto di incontrare membri della Real IRA, dopo la minaccia del gruppo repubblicano di uccidere altri poliziotti
Padrea Michael Canny afferma di ritenere che, nonostante la sua offerta di colloqui, i repubblicani siano interessati a raggiungere gli obiettivi solo attraverso al violenza.
“Questo riguarda la loro agenda e non ci sono spazi per manovre”, ha affermato.
Aggiungendo: “Sono preparato ad incontrare chiunque e a parlare con chiunque, ma sento che queste persone hanno puntato gli occhi solo su un percorso: cercare di riunificare l’Irlanda con la forza.
“Sto dicendo che non può essere fatto con la forza, può essere realizzato solo convincendo la gente e attraverso il processo democratico”.
Il 32 County Sovereignty Movement ha organizzato il raduno per commemorare l’anniversario dell’Easter Rising del 1916.
Il 32CSM viene indicato come l’ala politica della Real IRA, il gruppo armato responsabile della bomba di Omagh del 15 agosto 1998 che uccise 29 persone e due gemelli non ancora nati.
E’ responsabile anche per la morte di due soldati britannici, attaccati due anni fa mentre uscivano dalla caserma di Massereene ad Antrim, e dell’esplosione di un’autobomba a Derry lo scorso anno.
Nel comunicato letto da un uomo a volto coperto al City Cemetery di Derry, la Real IRA dice che gli agenti di polizia diventeranno un obiettivo “senza alcun riguardo per la loro religione, bagaglio culturale o motivazione”.
L’organizzazione ha anche espresso la propria opposizione alla visita della Regina in Irlanda.
“La Regina d’Inghilterra è ricercata in Irlanda per crimini di guerra e non la vogliamo sul nostro suolo”, aggiunge la dichiarazione.

Fr Michael Canny offers to meet Real IRA members
A Londonderry priest has offered to meet members of the Real IRA, after the dissident group threatened to kill more police officers.
Fr Michael Canny said that despite his offer to talk he believed dissidents were interested only in pursuing their goals through violence.
“That is what the agenda is and there is no room for manoeuvre,” he said.
He added: “I would be prepared to meet anybody and talk to anybody, but I have a feeling that these people have set their sights on one course and that is trying to unite Ireland by force.
“I am saying that it cannot be done by force, that it can only be done by convincing people and through the democratic process.”
The 32 County Sovereignty Movement organised the rally to mark the anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising.
It is regarded as the political wing of the Real IRA, the organisation which claimed responsibility for the Omagh bomb which killed 29 people and unborn twins in 1998.
It also killed two soldiers in Antrim two years ago and exploded a car bomb in Derry last year.
In a statement read out at the City Cemetery in Derry, the Real IRA said police officers would be targeted “regardless of their religion, cultural background or motivation”.
The organisation also expressed its opposition to the Queen’s impending visit to Ireland.
“The Queen of England is wanted for war crimes in Ireland and is not wanted on Irish soil,” the statement added.
