Un prete di Derry incontra i sostenitori dei repubblicani le cui famiglie vengono molestate dalla PSNI

Padre Paddy O’Kane aveva già affrontato i paramilitari repubblicani riguardo alle loro violenze.

Ha acconsentito all’incontro dopo colloqui tenuti con il 32 County Sovereignty Movement, la presunta ala politica della Real IRA.

“La gente viene qui ogni giorno con i loro dolori, tutto ciò che possiamo fare è ascoltare” ha affermato.

“Quelle famiglie sono innocenti, qualsiasi cosa stiano facendo i sostenitori (dei repubblicani). Se provano dolore, il minimo che posso fare è ascoltare il loro dolore”.

Padre O’Keane aveva criticato i responsabili dell’attacco esplosivo contro la stazione di polizia di Strand Road a Derry e degli allarmi bomba lanciati in città. Ha affermato di aver trasmesso la disumanità di questi attacchi durante i colloqui con il 32 County Sovereignty Movement.

Ma altresì ha affermato di avere obblighi pastorali e quindi deve ascoltare le preoccupazioni delle famiglie dopo che lo hanno contattato per un incontro.

“Le famiglie affermano di aver parlato di questo (del comportamento della polizia) per un po’ di tempo e nessuno ha voluto ascoltarli”, ha aggiunto.

“Vado semplicemente ad ascoltare, non ho intenzione di entrare nella rissa politica”.

Secondo il prete è meglio fare appello alla miglior natura della gente, ma non ha attese in vista dell’incontro.

Gregory Campbell, parlamentare del DUP ha detto: “Posso comprendere la preoccupazione pastorale ma il problema che avrei è poterlo tradurre in una sorta di dialogo che, non viene fatto con la giusta premessa – che chi porta violenza o la propaga deve fermarla prima dell’inizio di qualsiasi colloquio”.

Il 32 County Sovereignty Movement sarebbe legato alla Real IRA, responsabile di attacchi avvenuti a Derry, compreso l’omicidio di Kieran Doherty eseguito a febbraio.

Nel 1998 la Real IRA compì l’attacco di Omagh, quando una bomba uccise 29 persone tra cui una donna incinta di due gemelli.

Ha aggiunto Campbell: “Le molestie verso chiunque sono inaccettabili. Non ricevo l’impressione che gente comune impegnata nei propri affari e che non sostiene la violenza – non mi danno l’indicazione che stanno subendo ripetuti arresti e interrogatori da parte della polizia.

“Ma chiunque sia sospettato di svolgere attività repubblicana deve essere controllato dalla polizia. Infatti sarebbe un errore da parte della PSNI se così non avvenisse”.

La polizia ha avvertito di star affrontando la più grave minaccia da parte dei repubblicani dal 1998.

Priest to ‘listen’ to dissident abuse claims

A Londonderry priest is to meet supporters of dissident republicans who claim their families are being harassed by the PSNI.

Father Paddy O’Kane has already challenged gunmen over their violence.

He agreed to the meeting after talks with the 32 County Sovereignty Committee, which represents the Real IRA politically.

“People come every day with their pain, all we can do is listen,” he said.

“It is just a blotting paper exercise. Those families are innocent, whatever their (dissident republican) supporters are doing. If they are in pain, the least I can do is listen to their pain.”

He has criticised those behind the bomb attack on Strand Road police station in Derry and recent hoax bomb alerts. He said he conveyed the inhumanity of the attacks during the talks with the 32 County Sovereignty Committee.

But he said he had a pastoral duty to listen to the families’ concerns after they approached him for an audience.

“They are claiming they have complained about this (police behaviour) for some time and no-one wants to listen to them,” he added.

“I am going there simply to listen, I have no intention of entering into the political affray.”

He said it was best to appeal to people’s better natures but had raised no expectations ahead of the meeting.

The DUP’s Gregory Campbell said: “I can understand any pastoral concern but the issue I would have is this may translate into some form of dialogue which, unless it’s done with the right premise – that being those who carry out violence or propagate violence need to stop the violence before any talks begin.”

The 32 County Sovereignty Committee is linked to the Real IRA, which has claimed responsibility for a number of recent attacks in Londonderry, including the murder of Kieran Doherty in February.

In 1998 it planted the Omagh bomb which killed 29 people including a woman pregnant with twins.

Mr Campbell added: “The harassment of anybody is unacceptable. I am not getting the impression that ordinary people who are engaged in their own business and aren’t supporting violence – they aren’t giving me or any other public representative the indication that they are suffering repeated arrest and questioning from the police.

“But those who are suspected of being involved in dissident activity have to come under scrutiny from the police. In fact it would be a failure on the part of the PSNI if they didn’t.”

Police have warned they are facing the greatest threat from dissidents since 1998.
