Paisley Junior chiede indagini su Gerry Adams

Ian Paisley Jr ha chiesto all’Assemblea di indagare se Gerry Adams ha infranto le regole dopo aver mancato di collaborare con le autorità sui presunti abusi sessuali compiuti dal fratello. Inviando una lettera-denuncia all’Assembly Ombudsman, Tom Frawley, Paisley chiede se Adams ha infranto il codice comportamentale dell’Assemblea

Frawley dovrà decidere se trasferire le denunce al Committee on Standards and Privileges dell’Assemblea.

Rispondendo alla denuncia presentata da Paisley, Gerry Adams ha detto di non avere nulla da nascondere.

“Se l’Assembly Ombudsman desidera parlare con me su questo argomento, sicuramente collaborerò pienamente con lui”, afferma.

Ha anche chiesto al parlamentare del DUP i motivi del gesto.

“Questo è uno spregevole tentativo di Ian Paisley Junior di distrarre l’attenzione dalle difficoltà interne al DUP”, ha aggiunto.

Liam Adams si è consegnato il mese scorso alla polizia nella Repubblica d’Irlanda ma gli ufficiali non hanno potuto trattenerlo perché la PSNI non aveva fatto richiesta per l’European arrest warrant (Mandato di arresto europeo).

Il fratello più giovane del presidente dello Sinn Fein deve rispondere di 23 accuse per stupro e molestie verso sua figlia, Aine Tyrell, avvenute in Irlanda del Nord tra gli anni Settanta ed Ottanta.

Liam Adams si è recato presso una stazione della Garda nella Contea di Sligo, alcuni giorni dopo l’appello pubblico fatto dal presidente dello Sinn Fein, dove gli chiedeva di affrontare le accuse rivoltegli.

Ma fonti della PSNI riferiscono che dovrebbe arrivare fine gennaio, “come tempo minimo”, prima di ottenere il mandato che permetterebbe alla polizia irlandese di consegnare Adams.

“La situazione non cambierà nel prossimo futuro fino a quando si consegnerà alla polizia nordirlandese”, ha aggiunto la fonte.

La polizia stava ricercando Liam Adams da novembre 2008, quando non si presentò in tribunale a Belfast. La il mandato di arresto copriva solamente il Regno Unito.

Gerry Adams si disse “sorpreso” perché non era stato preparato il mandato di arresto europeo.

Sua nipote, Aine Tyrell, 36 anni, sollevò il velo di anonimato per parlare pubblicamente degli abusi subìti alla trasmissione “Insight Special” lo scorso dicembre.

Domande sono state sollevate su quanto tempo Liam Adams lavorò con i bambini dopo essere stato espulso dallo Sinn Fein.

Dal 1998 al 2003, ha lavorato al Clonard Youth Centre di Belfast e presso il Muirhevnamor Community Youth Project a Dundalk nella Contea di Louth.

Fu coinvolto anche in un altro progetto con i ragazzi a West Belfast tra il 2004 ed il 2006.

Tutte e tre le organizzazione hanno riferito di non essere state messe a conoscenza delle voci contro Liam Adams.

Paisley Jr calls for Adams investigation

Ian Paisley Jr has asked the Assembly to investigate whether Gerry Adams broke the rules after reportedly failing to cooperate early enough with the authorities over his brother’s alleged sex abuse.
Submitting an eight-point complaint letter to Assembly Ombudsman Tom Frawley Mr Paisley said he raised the matter out of concern that Mr Adams had breached the Assembly code of conduct.

Mr Frawley will decide whether to pass the complaints onto the Assembly’s Committee on Standards and Privileges.

Responding to the complaint lodged by Mr Paisley, Mr Adams insisted he had nothing to hide.

“If the Assembly Ombudsman wants to speak to me on this issue, I will, of course, co-operate fully,” he said.

He also questioned the DUP MLA’s motives.

“This is a despicable attempt by Ian Paisley Junior to distract attention away from internal DUP difficulties,” he added.

Liam Adams handed himself in to police in the Irish Republic last month but officers were unable to detain him because the PSNI had not yet applied for a European arrest warrant.

The younger brother of the Sinn Fein president is facing 23 charges of raping and molesting his daughter, Aine Tyrell, in Northern Ireland in the 1970s and 1980s.

He walked into a Garda station in Co Sligo days after the Sinn Fein president issued a public appeal urging him to face up to the allegations levelled against him.

But PSNI sources said it would be late January “at the earliest” before they could obtain a warrant which would enable gardai to take Adams into custody and hand him over.

“The situation won’t change in the near future unless he hands himself in to police in Northern Ireland,” the source added.

The police have been hunting for Adams since November 2008 when he failed to turn up for a court appearance in Belfast. But the warrant issued for his arrest then only covered the UK.

Gerry Adams was said to be “surprised” no European warrant had already been prepared before his appearance on a UTV documentary.

His niece, Aine Tyrell, now 36, waived her right to anonymity to go public with the abuse allegations in an Insight Special last December.

Questions have since been raised about how Liam Adams secured positions working with children after he was expelled from Sinn Fein.

From 1998 to 2003, he worked in the Clonard Youth Centre in Belfast and in the Muirhevnamor Community Youth Project in Dundalk, Co Louth.

He was then involved with another youth project in west Belfast from 2004 to 2006.

All three organisations said they were not aware of the claims against him.
