Il ferimento con arma da fuoco di un importante lealista fa temere ad un aumento delle tensioni prima di Natale
William Cameron, 50 anni, è stato attaccato venerdì sera vicino ai negozi del quartiere Castlemara a Carrickfergus.
Il consigliere locale Billy Ashe ha detto al Belfast Telegraph che la gente ha paura di cosa può avvenire adesso.
William Cameron, importante lealista incarcerato per possesso di proiettili, era coinvolto politicamente con l’Ulster Democratic Party (UDP) e in seguito con l’Ulster Political Research Group (URPG), entrambi strettamente legati con i paramilitari dell’Ulster Defence Association (UDA).
Cameron stava passeggiando quando è stato avvicinato da tre uomini a volto coperto, che gli hanno sparato ad un polpaccio.
Asha ha detto: “Avevamo sperato che questi fatti insensati fossero sepolti nel passato e non vogliamo il ritorno di questo genere di attacchi a Carrickfergus”.
Il parlamentare di Alliance Party Stewart Dickson ha detto di essere “disgustato” dall’attacco in stile paramilitare e condannare gli autori dell’agguato.
“Gli attacchi come questo non hanno posto nella nostra società e spero che la vittima sia capace di una completa guarigione.
“I miei pensieri sono rivolti a lui in questo momento difficile” ha detto il parlamentare.
Roy Beggs, parlamentare per East Antrim, ha detto che l’attacco potrebbe provocare cicatrici, disabilità o qualcosa di peggio.
“È profondamente deplorevole che una pistola sia stata utilizzata sulle strade di Carrickfergus.
“La polizia viene distratta dalle sue normali funzioni per indagare su questo grave incidente” ha detto Beggs.
“Vorrei fare appello alla comunità locale affinché aiuto la polizia, che hanno bisogno di informazioni per affrontare questo crimine”.
Gli investigatori chiedono ai presunti testimoni di farsi avanti.
“È stato riferito che verso le 19:30 un uomo, di circa cinquant’anni, era fuori a piedi nei pressi dei negozi di Castlemara, Carrickfergus, quando è stato avvicinato da tre maschi a volto coperto”, ha detto un portavoce della PSNI.
“L’uomo è stato successivamente colpito alla gamba ed è stato portato in ospedale per la medicazione di un singolo colpo di pistola al polpaccio.
“Si ritiene che i tre maschi si siano allontanati a piedi, ma non sappiamo in che direzione”.
Loyalist William Cameron shot in leg sparking fears of further violence
The shooting of a top loyalist in Co Antrim has sparked fears of further trouble before Christmas.
William Cameron (50) was attacked on Friday night close to shops on the Castlemara estate in Carrickfergus.
Local councillor Billy Ashe told the Belfast Telegraph that people were fearing for the future.
Cameron, who has a conviction for possessing bullets, was politically involved with the Ulster Democratic Party (UDP) and later the Ulster Political Research Group (UPRG), both of which were linked to the UDA.
Cameron was out walking when he was approached by three masked men, who shot him once in the calf.
Mr Ashe said: “We had hoped that all this nonsense was in the past and we don’t want to see a return to these kinds of attacks in Carrickfergus.”
Alliance MLA Stewart Dickson said he was “disgusted” after the paramilitary-style shooting and “utterly condemned” those involved.
“Attacks like this have no place in our society and I hope the victim is able to make a full recovery.
“My thoughts are with him at this difficult time,” he said.
East Antrim MLA Roy Beggs said the attack could result in scars, disability, or worse for the victim.
“It is deeply regrettable that a gun has been brought onto our streets.
“The police will have been diverted from their normal duties to investigate this serious incident,” he said.
“I would appeal to the local community to help the police, who will need information to address this crime which is inhibiting the local community.”
Detectives are appealing for witnesses to Friday’s shooting to come forward.
“It was reported that at around 7.30pm a man, aged in his 50s, was out walking close to Castlemara shops when he was approached by three masked males,” a PSNI spokesman said.
“The man was subsequently shot in the leg and was taken to hospital for treatment for a single gunshot wound to his calf.
“It is believed the three males made off on foot, however direction of travel is unknown at this time.”
