Paramilitari non responsabili per i disordini di venerdì sera

I paramilitari non sono responsabili per gli scontri notturni a East Belfast, che hanno causato il ferimento di sei agenti di polizia. Lo comunica un funzionario della PSNI.

Sette persone sono state arrestate quando i disordini sono scoppiati nella zona di Castlereagh Street e Albertbridge Road, dopo una parata definita “mini Twelfth” (piccolo 12 luglio, Ndt), organizzata dall’Orange Order per commemorare la Battaglia della Somme.

La PSNI ritiene che i riot siano stati spontanei e non orchestrati.

Mark McEwan, Ispettore Capo della PSNI, ha affermato: “Da quello che abbiamo potuto vedere non c’era coinvolgimento paramilitare in quanto è avvenuto l’altra sera. La violenza è stata spontanea, voluta da alcune persone nella zona di Castlereagh Street che stavao attaccando la polizia, esplosa poi dalla folla riunitasi da entrambi i lati (della comunità)”.

Altri piccoli incidenti, tra cui un’aggressione, hanno alimntatola violenza.

Gli agenti hanno utilizzato proiettili di plastica ed un cannone ad acqua per cercare di disperdere la folla, portando la calma in Albertbridge Road nelle prime ore della mattina.

Alliance Party ha condannato l’ennesima serata di gravi violenze avvenute a East Belfast nelle ultime settimane.

Naomi Long ha affermato: “La gente della zona vuole vivere libera da paura e disagio e chiedo a chiunque sia coinvolto nei disordini di agire con responsabilità e smetterla dal colpire la comunità. E’ sconvolgent che sei agenti di polizia siano rimasti feriti in questi disordini”.

Due settimane fa, molte bottiglie incendiarie sono state lanciate contro la polizia ed un fotografo è stato ferito da un proiettile in una gamba, mentre centinaia di persone sono scese in strada a combattere.

La UVF è stata ritenuta responsabile per quelle violenze.

Paramilitaries ‘not behind riot’

Paramilitaries were not behind overnight clashes in east Belfast which left six police officers injured, a senior officer said.

Seven people were arrested when rioting broke out in the Castlereagh Street and Albertbridge Road areas of the city after the “mini Twelfth” parade.

The PSNI believes the trouble was spontaneous disorder and not orchestrated.

PSNI Chief Inspector Mark McEwan said: “From what we can see there was no paramilitary involvement in what happened last night. The violence was spontaneous, it was by a number of people within the Castlereagh Street area attacking police, sparked off by crowds gathering on both sides.”

It is understood a number of minor incidents, including an assault, sparked the violence.

Officers used rubber bullets and a water cannon to try and disperse the crowds, bringing calm to the Albertbridge Road area during the early hours of the morning.

The Alliance Party condemned the third night of serious violence in east Belfast in recent weeks.

Naomi Long MP said: “People in the area want to get on with their lives free from fear and disruption and I would appeal to those involved in the trouble to act responsibly and stop hurting the community. It is appalling that six police officers were injured during these disturbances.”

Two weeks ago petrol bombs were thrown at police and a press photographer was shot as hundreds took to the streets in the area.

The UVF were blamed for orchestrating that violence.
