Il rappresentante di Strangford, David McNarry, è stato allontanato dalla camera e dall’intero complesso di Stormont per l’intero giorno dopo aver rifiutato di ritirare le accuse fatte contro Raymond McCartney, eletto nella circoscrizione di Foyle.
Lo Speaker dell’Assemblea William Hay ha stabilito che i commenti – fatti il 18 maggio – erano antiparlamentari.
“Ho riflettuto su quanto detto da McNarry in quel particolare dibattito e credo che accuse dirette e non circostanziate di comportamento criminale siano state fatte contro un altro membro”, ha riferito.
Hay ha chiesto a McNarry di ritirarle e quando ha declinato l’invito ha ordinato di allontanarlo dall’aula.
L’ex capo dell’Ulster Unionist Party ha fatto i commenti durante il question time con il ministro per la Cultura, Arti e Tempo Libero, Gregory Campbell.
McCartney ha chiesto al ministro se aveva pianificato di copiare un provvedimento governativo scozzese che versa i soldi sequestrati ai criminali in progetti a beneficio della comunità.
Dopo la risposta del ministro Campbell, McNarry è intervenuto.
“Noto che il membro di Foyle, autore della precedente domanda, che dovrebbe conoscere qualcuno che dovrebbe saperne di più, non sta offrendo contanti provenienti dal ricavato della rapina alla Northern Bank”, ha detto. “Vorrebbe sostanzialmente aggiungere i fondi del recupero dei beni criminali qualora lui o qualcuno dei suoi amici si presentassero”.
Al momento McCartney chiese di sottoporre i commenti all’ufficio dello Speaker e oggi Hay ha fornito la propria decisione.
McNarry non è il primo unionista espulso dalla camera durante questo mandato all’Assemblea. I membri del DUP Iris Robinson e Nelson McCausland sono stati entrambi sospesi – McCausland per due volte.

MLA expelled over SF robbery claim
Strangford representative David McNarry was suspended from the chamber and the wider Stormont estate for the day after refusing to withdraw remarks he made about Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney.
Speaker William Hay ruled that the comments – made on May 18th – were unparliamentary.
“I have reflected on what Mr McNarry said in that particular debate and I believe that direct unsubstantiated allegations of criminal behaviour were made against another member,” he said.
Mr Hay asked Mr McNarry to withdraw them and when he declined he ordered him from chamber.
The former Ulster Unionist Party chief whip made the comments during question time with Culture, Arts and Leisure Minister Gregory Campbell.
Mr McCartney had asked the minister whether he planned to replicate a government scheme in Scotland which ploughed money seized from criminals back into projects that benefit the community.
After Mr Campbell gave his response, Mr McNarry interjected.
“I note that the Member for Foyle who asked the previous question, who might know someone who might know some more, is not offering cash back from the proceeds of the Northern Bank robbery,” he said. “It would substantially add to the criminal asset recovery funds if he or some of his friends were to come forward.”
At the time Mr McCartney asked for the comments to be referred to the Speaker’s office and today Mr Hay gave his ruling.
Mr McNarry is not the first unionist to be expelled from the chamber during this Assembly term. DUP members Iris Robinson and Nelson McCausland have both been issued suspensions – Mr McCausland on two occasions.
