Il politico del DUP si presenterà alle prossime Elezioni Generali, probabilmente a maggio o giugno 2010, cercando di mantenere il seggio alla Casa dei Comuni.
Se riuscisse ad essere eletto, lascerebbe il posto nell’Assemblea (di Stormont, NdT) ed in seguito anche il proprio posto nel consiglio.
Simpson, che ha detto al Portadown Times di vivere con lo stipendio di Westminster, dando via le 14.000 sterline ricevute da Stormont e dal Craigavon Borough Council, ha affermato che le prossime elezioni per Westminster saranno più dure per il DUP rispetto al 2005, quando si aggiudicò il seggio e spazzò via il leader dellUlster Unionist Party David Trimble.
Da allora, il DUP è entrato nell’amministrazione condivisa dell’Assemblea, inizialmente guidata da Ian Paisley ed in seguito da Peter Robinson, che ha portato molte critiche dall’UUP e dal leader del Traditional Unionist Voice, Jim Allister, che a causa delle divisione del potere con lo Sinn Fein lasciò il Democratic Unionist Party.
Tutto è divenuto più chiaro alle passate elezioni europee quando il DUP – con Diane Dodds come candidata – hanno visto il loro voto a brandelli, con Bairbre de Brun dello Sinn Fein eletta come candidata più votata e Jim Nicholson (UUP) che ha visto incrementare il proprio supporto. La Dodds – cui Allister ha sottratto una larga parte di elettori – non ha raggiunto la quota (necessaria per un’elezione diretta, NdT).
“Dobbiamo tenere conto di tutte queste cose”, ha detto Simpson. “Dobbiamo avvicinarci di più ai nostri sostenitori e forse un po’ di umiltà non sarebbe male.
“Ma ci uniremo nuovamente, e devo dire che qui in Upper Bann i tre unionisti in campo consegnerebbero il seggio a John O’Dowd dello Sinn Fein, che boicotterebbe Westminster. Sono sicuro di essere l’unico unionista a poter vincere il seggio”.
Simpson ha rivelato che, nonostante sia nella categoria di chi ha 3 lavori, viva con il salario di Westminster di circa 64.000 sterline all’anno.
Essere parlamentare a Stormont gli permette di guadagnare 42.000 sterline, ma essere anche parlamentare a Westminster gli fa incassare solamente un terzo di quella cifra. E Simpson rivela che il salario netto di 1.200 sterline mensili ricevute dall’Assemblea e dal Craigavon Borough Council vengono devolute per progetti locali, gruppi comunitari, organizzazioni caritatevoli e individui che abbisognano di assistenza finanziaria.
“Ho lasciato il posto di presidente del Comitato per lo Sviluppo Sociale nell’Assemblea, e sto per fare lo stesso con il seggio di Stormont e al Civic Centre”, ha confermato. “Il mio scopo è di concentrarmi su Westminster e ho fiducia di vedere riconosciuto il mio duro lavoro degli ultimi quattro anni. Ho dato tutto quello che avevo”.

MP Simpson intends to quit Assembly and council seats
The DUP man will be fighting the next General Election, probably next May or June, hoping to make it back to the House of Commons.
If he succeeds, he has pledged to vacate his Assembly seat, and will probably be quitting the council before then.
Mr Simpson, who told the Portadown Times that he lives on his Westminster salary, giving away the £14,000 he receives from Stormont and from Craigavon Borough Council, conceded that the next Westminster election would be tougher for the DUP than 2005 when he swept the Upper Bann incumbent and UUP leader David Trimble from power.
Since then, the DUP have embraced power sharing at the Assembly, led initially by Ian Paisley and then by Peter Robinson, which led to criticism from the UUP and from the TUV’s Jim Allister, who quit the Democrats because of their about-turn.
It all came into sharp focus at the European elections when the DUP – with Diane Dodds their candidate – saw their vote shredded, with Bairbre de Brun (SF) topping the poll and Jim Nicholson (UUP) increasing his support. Dodds – with Allister attracting a large part of her erstwhile vote – limped home without making the quota.
“We have taken all these things on board,” said Mr Simpson. “We need to connect more with our supporters and perhaps a bit of humility wouldn’t go amiss.
“But we will re-group, and I have to say that here in Upper Bann, three unionists in the field would hand the seat to Sinn Fein’s John O’Dowd who would boycott Westminster. I am convinced that I am the only unionist who could win the seat.”
Mr Simpson revealed that, even though he was in the triple jobbing category, he lived on his Westminster salary which is £64,000 a year.
Being an MLA attracts a salary of £42,000, but MLAS who are also MPs receive just one-third of that. And Mr Simpson revealed that his nett salary of £1,200 per month received from the Assembly and Craigavon Borough Council was donated to local projects, community groups, charity organisations and individuals in need of financial assistance within the constituency.
“I have stepped down as chairman of the Assembly’s social development committee, and I am giving up my seats at Stormont and the Civic Centre,” he confirmed. “My aim is to concentrate on Westminster and I trust that I will be returned on my record of hard work over the past four years. I have given it all I have.”
