La PSNI ha svolto un’operazione a basso profilo nel centro cittadino quando la parata organizzata dalla Pride of the Bann è passata senza incidenti.
Una folla di circa 50 persone si è radunata in fondo a Bridge Street per vedere il transito delle bande.
Un uomo, giunto per la parata e che non vuol comunicare il suo nome, ha detto: “La gente normale è disgustata da quanto accaduto. Questo sta venendo per un tempo, tuttavia. Ci sono state tensioni a Heights”.
Ha anche espresso disappunto perché una banda si è fermata al ponte per alcuni minuti, mentre i membri cantavano.
“Non c’era bisogno di ciò”, ha aggiunto.
C’era una bassa presenza di polizia sulla parte est del ponte. Sul Waterside un furgone della polizia era parcheggiato e sei poliziotti erano a piedi. Comunque, a meno di un miglio, appartenenti della squadra di supporto tattico erano in attesa di entrare in azione in caso di fermenti.
Nel corso della serata il corpo di Kevin McDaid è stato riportato nella sua abitazione.
La bara è arrivata nel quartiere di Heights poco prima delle 20 dove è stata accolta da familiari ed amici.
Un singolo mazzo di rose rosse era stato portato nell’abitazione prima che la bara fosse portata all’interno dai figli di Kevin e dall’amico di famiglia Peter Neill.
E’ stata seguita da una folla di persone.
Ci sono stati singhiozzi ovattati mentre Ryan, uno dei figli di Kevin che tenne il padre tra le braccia mentre stava morendo, ha confortato i partecipanti al lutto restando all’esterno della casa mentre la bara si trovava all’interno.
C’era un umore tetro nell’aria prima dell’arrivo del corpo di McDaid e la gente è rimasta fuori dall’abitazione per un po’ di tempo in seguito all’arrivo della bara.
Mentre accadeva tutto questo, si poteva chiaramente udire il rumore della parata nel centro cittadino.
I parlamentari shinner Francie Brolly e Billy Leonard erano mescolati tra la gente che è uscita per mostrare il proprio sostegno alla famiglia McDaid.
Otto uomini sono stati accusati dell’omicidio settario del padre di quattro figli e del tentato omicidio del suo amico Damien Fleming, che si trova ancora in condizioni critiche in ospedale.
Mentre la banda Pride of the Bann ha deciso volontariamente di ridimensionare il percorso della potenzialmente pericolosa parata, c’è il timore che la violenza possa esplodere mentre le tensioni stanno bollendo a Coleraine.
La parata doveva passare molto vicino all’ingresso di Heights, dove McDaid era stato picchiato fino alla morte e Fleming aveva subito una brutale aggressione, la scorsa domenica.
Ma mercoledì la banda musicale ha annunciato di non voler attraversare il Bann Bridge.
Parlando prima della controversa marcia, un portavoce della polizia ha affermato: “La polizia, gli organizzatori e i rappresentanti comunitari lavoreranno a stretto contatto e le risorse della polizia messe in campo la sera saranno appropriate e proporzionate”.
L’operazione della polizia era concentrata nell’area del Bann Bridge – dove in base alla modifica del percorso la parata ha girato a destra lungo Circular Road – a soli 5 minuti a piedi dall’ingresso al quartiere di Heights.
Loyalist parade passes peacefully but tensions still simmer
The PSNI mounted a low profile operation in the town centre last night as the Pride of the Bann parade passed off without incident.
A crowd of about 50 people gathered at the bottom of Bridge Street to see the bands pass by.
One man, who came to see the parade but did not want to be named, said: “Ordinary people are disgusted by what has happened. This has been coming for a while, though.There have been tensions in the Heights.”
He also expressed disappointment that one band stopped at the bridge for several minutes while members chanted.
“There’s no need for that,” he said.
There was a low key police presence on the east side of the bridge. On the Waterside a police van was parked and six officers stood on patrol. However, less than a mile away, members of the tactical support team were on stand-by in the event of any unrest.
Earlier in the evening the body of Mr McDaid was returned to his family home.
The coffin arrived at the Heights estate shortly before 8pm where it was met by family and friends.
A single bouquet of red roses was taken into the house before the coffin was carried in by Kevin’s sons as well as family friend Peter Neill.
It followed by a crowd of mourners.
There were muffled sobs as Ryan, one of Kevin’s sons, who held his father in his arms as he lay dying, comforted mourners standing outside the house after the coffin had been taken inside.
There was a sombre mood in the estate ahead of the arrival of Mr McDaid’s body and mourners remained outside the family home for some time afterwards.
While this was all going on the noise of the march taking place in the town centre could be clearly heard.
Sinn Fein MLAs Francie Brolly and Billy Leonard were among the crowd of people who turned out to show their support for the McDaid family.
Eight men have been charged in connection with the sectarian murder of the father-of-four and the attempted murder of his friend Damien Fleming, who remains in a critical condition in hospital.
While The Pride of the Bann flute band voluntarily made the decision to reroute last night’s potentially explosive parade, fears remain that violence would erupt as tensions simmer in Coleraine.
The parade had been due to pass close to the entrance of the Heights estate where 49-year-old Mr McDaid was beaten to death and Mr Fleming viciously assaulted on Sunday .
But on Wednesday night the band announced it would not cross the Bann Bridge as part of the route.
Speaking ahead of the controversial parade, a PSNI spokesman said: “Police, organisers and community representatives will be working closely together and police resources put in place on the evening will be appropriate and proportionate.”
The PSNI operation was concentrated in the area of the Bann Bridge — where under the revised route the parade turned right along the Circular Road — and which is only a five-minute walk from the entrance of the Heights estate.
