La famiglia dell’avvocato assassinato merita la verità, dopo che le promesse di una inchiesta pubblica non sono state mantenute, a dichiarato il parlamentare dello Sinn Fein per North Belfast, Gerry Kelly.

A Stormont era in discussione la gestione del caso da parte del governo.

Gerry Kelly ha spiegato: “Lo Stato penò che Pat Finucane era sacrificabile. Tale questione, a mio parere, dovrebbe unire le vittime che rappresentano nell’assemblea..

“La famiglia merita la verità e, francamente, anche noi tutti”.

Pat Finucane venne ucciso dai lealisti nella sua casa di North Belfast nel 1989.

Martedì scorso, Geraldine Finucane, vedova del legale, è uscita da un incontro con il primo ministro David Cameron dopo che il capo del governo le aveva riferito di aver affidato il riesame del caso all’avvocato Sir Desmond de Silva, legale alto livello ed esperto internazionalmente riconosciuto di situazioni post-belliche in Serbia e in Sierra Leone.

Paul Givan, parlamentare DUP, simpatizza con la famiglia Finucane, ma ha detto che un’altra inchiesta pubblica non poteva essere garantita.

“C’è una preoccupazione molto chiara da questo lato della casa (quello unionista, Ndt), che le indagini pubbliche vengono usate per scatenare una vendetta contro la RUC, invece che cercare di stabilire la fine (del dolore) per la famiglia”, ha riferito all’Assemblea.

“Quello che è fondamentale, è non dare più importanza ad alcuni delitti rispetto ad altri”.

Shot Finucane ‘was expendable’

The state thought that Pat Finucane was expendable, the Northern Ireland assembly has heard.

The dead lawyer’s family deserves the truth after promises of a public inquiry were not kept, Sinn Fein North Belfast MLA Gerry Kelly said.

The Government’s handling of the case was debated in the assembly.

Mr Kelly said: “The state thought that Pat Finucane was expendable. This issue, in my opinion, should unite victims we represent right across the assembly.

“The family deserves the truth and, frankly, so do we all.”

Mr Finucane was shot dead by loyalists in his north Belfast home in 1989.

Last Tuesday, Mr Finucane’s widow Geraldine walked out of a meeting with the Prime Minister after he told her that senior lawyer and internationally-recognised expert in post-conflict situations in Serbia and Sierra Leone Sir Desmond De Silva would hold a review of the case.

Paul Givan, of the DUP, sympathised with the Finucane family but said another open-ended public inquiry could not be afforded.

“There is a very clear concern from this side of the house that public inquiries have been used to wage a vendetta against the RUC, as opposed to seeking to establish closure for the family,” he said.

“What is important is that we do not elevate certain crimes above others.”
