Il primo ministro nordirlandese ed il suo vice sono stati invitati ad una cerimonia per celebrare l’arrivo del Papa a Edimburgo, ma non vi hanno partecipato
A Peter Robinson e Martin McGuinness era stato chiesto di essere tra i dignitari presentati al Papa dalla Regina.
Robinson ha detto di non poter recarsi ad Edinburgo perché doveva assistere all’apertura della nuova sede della New York stock exchange a Belfast nel pomeriggio di giovedi.
Anche McGuinness ha partecipato all’inaugurazione e l’ha descritta come “molto importante”.
Il vice primo ministro ha detto che il Papa era in visita di Stato in Gran Bretagna.
Ha aggiunto che sarebbe molto lieto di salutare il pontefice in Irlanda.
Robinson ha descritto l’evento della Borsa di New York come avente un significato enorme e ha detto che era molto importante per l’Irlanda del Nord.
Tuttavia, lo SDLP accusato entrambi i politici di “nascondersi dietro una banale scusa di essere occupati”.
Dolores Kelly, parlamentare SDLP, è un membro del comitato di Stormont che scruta il lavoro dell’Office of the First and Deputy First Minister (Ufficio del Primo Ministro e del Vice Primo Ministro), ha criticato Robinson e McGuinness per la loro assenza dalla cerimonia.
Occasione mancata
Ha messo in discussione il motivo per cui i due uomini politici non sono riusciti a trovare il tempo, quando altri ministri sono stati in grado di partecipare.
Per la Kelly è stata un’occasione mancata per Robinson e McGuinness di dimostrare che sono andati avanti.
Giovedì mattina Papa Benedetto XVI ha stretto la mano ai primi ministri della Scozia e del Galles durante il ricevimento reale nel palazzo di Holyrood House a Edimburgo.
La Regina ed il pontefice hanno lodato l’altro le istituzioni per il loro ruolo nel contribuire al processo di pace in Irlanda del Nord.
Nelle note informative rilasciate dai funzionari di Buckingham Palace era indicata la presenza di Peter Robinson all’evento.

Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness did not meet Pope
The first and deputy first ministers were invited to a ceremony to mark the arrival of the Pope in Edinburgh this morning, but did not not attend.
Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness were asked to be among the dignitaries presented to the Pope by the Queen.
Mr Robinson said he did not go because he had to attend the opening of the New York stock exchange’s new premises in Belfast on Thursday afternoon.
Mr McGuinness also attended the opening and described it as “very important”.
The deputy first minister said the Pope was on a state visit to Britain.
He added that he would be very pleased to greet the pontiff in Ireland.
Mr Robinson described the stock exchange event as having huge significance and said that it was very important for Northern Ireland.
However, the SDLP accused both men of “hiding behind a flimsy excuse of being busy”.
SDLP MLA Delores Kelly, who is a member of the Stormont committee which scrutinises the work of the Office of the First and Deputy First Minister, criticised Mr Robinson and McGuinness on their absence from the ceremony.
‘Missed opportunity’
She questioned why they could not find the time when other ministers were able to attend.
She said it was a missed opportunity for Mr Robinson and Mr McGuinness to show they had moved on.
Pope Benedict XVI shook hands with the first ministers of Scotland and Wales during the royal reception at Holyrood House in Edinburgh on Thursday morning.
The Queen and the pontiff praised each other’s institutions on their role in helping the Northern Ireland peace process.
Buckingham Palace officials had issued briefing notes which said Mr Robinson would be there.
