Robinson abbandona la carica di primo ministro nordirlandese

Lo Speaker dell’Assemblea di Stormont, Willian Hay, ha colto tutti di sorpresa quando ha riferito ai parlamentari di aver chiesto all’attuale ministro per lo Sviluppo Arlene Foster di prendere il posto di Primo Ministro.

Hay ha detto all’Assemblea che “le dimissioni (di Peter Robinson) hanno effetto immediato”.

Verrà indetto un incontro con i partiti per discutere la mossa a sorpresa.

I funzionari di Stormont hanno detto che le procedure potrebbero durare per circa sei settimane.

La mossa giunge dopo solo 1 ora da quando i colleghi del DUP avevano espresso sostegno a Peter Robinson, messo sotto pressione per lo scandalo finanziario che ha circondato la relazione della moglie Iris con il suo amante, ma resta alla guida del partito unionista.

In precedenza il vice di Robinson nel partito, Nigel Dodds, circondato dagli speranzosi colleghi, tra cui l’ex leader ed ex primo ministro Ian Paisley, ha raccontato di aver fornito “il più caloroso sostegno” come leader del DUP e come primo ministro dell’Esecutivo.

Dodds ha affermato: “I funzionari del Democratic Unionist Party, il gruppo assembleare, i membri eletti a Westminster, il parlamentare europeo, e a tempo debito ci sarà una riunione dell’Esecutivo del partito, hanno approvato all’unanimità, nonostante i tentativi da parte della stampa e dei nostri avversari politici di portare Peter Robinson a dimettersi da leader del partito, di offrirgli il pieno sostegno e di desiderare che resti al suo posto di leader del DUP”.

In reazione alla mossa proposta, il leader unionista del TUV Jim Allister ha detto che gli sembrava “un coreografico atterraggio morbido per Peter Robinson”. Sospetta che non tornerà più ad occupare la carica di Primo Ministro.

Peter Robinson, che ha giurato di voler ripulire il suo nome dopo aver negato con veemenza qualsiasi conoscenza degli irregolari affari finanziari della moglie, parlerà lunedì pomeriggio, dopo le continue richieste di dimissioni.

La famiglia Robinson è finita in crisi dopo la denuncia secondo la quale Iris aveva preso 50.000 sterline da due ricchi imprenditori per aiutare colui che allora era il suo amante, il diciannovenne Kirk McCambley. Con il denaro il giovane aveva aperto un ristorante a South Belfast.

Il documentario della BBC Spotlight aveva insinuato che Peter Robinson era a conoscenza della situazione ma non aveva fatto i passi necessari per avvertire le autorità preposte.

Se Robinson si dimetterà definitivamente, sia il posto di primo ministro che quello del suo vice dovranno essere assegnati nuovamente, mettendo in crisi il futuro dell’Esecutivo nordirlandese.

Lo Sinn Fein potrebbe ritardare la presentazione di un candidato fino a quando il DUP non si accordasse per stabilire una data entro la quale effettuare la devolution dei poteri su polizia e giustizia.

Se il vuoto di potere non si risolvesse entro 7 giorni, sarebbe obbligo del Segretario di Stato Shaun Woodward indire nuove elezioni in Irlanda del Nord.

McGuinness ha chiesto assistenza legale per vedere se le regole dell’Assemblea sono state infrante quando Robinson non avvertì le autorità parlamentari che la moglie aveva ottenuto prestiti per il suo giovane amante.

Secondo Carál Ní Chuilín, Sinn Fein, è “materia urgente” determinare se il Codice di Comportamento dei Parlamentari è stato infranto.

Lo Sinn Fein ha anche richiesto una mozione d’urgenza per delineare all’Assemblea qualsiasi implicazione per l’Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister dalle denunce fatte dal programma televisivo.

La mozione deve ancora essere accettata dallo Speaker di Stormont, William Hay.

Lunedì un portavoce di Gordon Brown ha detto che il primo ministro britannico resta focalizzato sulla devolution dei poteri da Londra a Belfast.

“Il primo ministro resta focalizzato sull’argomento”, ha detto.

“Il Segrtario di Stato per l’Irlanda del Nord è in costante contatto con il primo ministero sull’argomento ed il primo ministro ha parlato recentemente con il Taoiseach Brian Cowen e con i leader dei partiti nordirlandesi”.

La signora Robinson ha annunciato nel periodo di Natale di voler abbandonare la politica a causa di una grave depressione. Adesso si dimetterà da parlamentare, sia a Westminster che a Belfast, e da consigliere locale. Il DUP ha deciso di allontanarla dal partito.

Domenica sera Robinson aveva rivlato chesua moglie Iris sta ricevendo trattamenti psichiatrici acuti.

First Minister Robinson steps aside

Peter Robinson has stepped aside as Northern Ireland’s First Minister.

Assembly speaker William Hay told surprised politicians in the chamber that Northern Ireland’s current enterprise minister Arlene Foster has been asked to temporarily take on the functions of First Minister.

Mr Hay told the chamber: “The designation takes immediate effect.”

He said he was calling a meeting of party whips to discuss the surprise move.

Stormont officials said the procedural device could last for six weeks.

The shock move comes just one hour after DUP colleagues backed the beleaguered Mr Robinson, who was under pressure to resign over the scandal surrounding his wife’s undisclosed financial dealings with her lover, but remains at the head of his party.

Earlier Deputy Leader Nigel Dodds, flanked by party faithful including former leader the Rev Ian Paisley, said they offered Mr Robinson their “wholehearted support” as leader and as First Minister.

Mr Dodds said: “The Democratic Unionist Party officers, Assembly Group, Parliamentary Party and European Member, and in due course there will be a meeting of the party Executive, unanimously agreed despite attempts by members of the press and our political opponents to press the Rt Hon Peter Robinson to resign as party leader – we offer him our wholehearted support and our desire for him to remain in office as leader of the Democratic Unionist Party.”

Reacting to the proposed move, TUV leader Jim Allister said it appeared to him to be “a choreographed soft landing for Peter Robinson”. He suspected that he would never return to the post of First Minister.

The First Minister, who has vowed to clear his name after vehemently denying any knowledge of his wife’s irregular financial affairs, will address the assembly on Monday afternoon amid calls for his resignation.

The first couple have been plunged into crisis after it emerged that Mrs Robinson had secured £50,000 from two wealthy developers to help her then 19-year-old lover Kirk McCambley set up a restaurant business in south Belfast.

A BBC documentary further alleged that her husband became aware of the situation but did not take steps to alert the appropriate authorities.

If Mr Robinson resigns, the posts of First Minister and Deputy First Minister, held by Martin McGuinness, would have to be filled, throwing the future of Northern Ireland’s power-sharing Executive into question.

Sinn Fein could delay nominating unless the DUP agreed to a timescale for the devolution of policing and justice.

If the power vacuum is not resolved within seven days it would fall to Secretary of State Shaun Woodward to call a Northern Ireland election.

Mr McGuinness has asked for legal advice on whether Assembly rules were breached after Mr Robinson failed to report his wife Iris to the parliamentary authorities for obtaining loans for her teenage lover.

Sinn Fein Chief Whip Carál Ní Chuilín said determining whether the Members’ Code of Conduct has been breached was a “matter of urgency”.

Sinn Fein has also requested an emergency motion to outline to the Assembly any possible implications for the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister from the allegations made in the television programme.

The motion has still to be accepted by Stormont Speaker William Hay.

On Monday, a spokesman for Gordon Brown said the Prime Minister remained focused on completing devolution of policing powers from London to Belfast.

“The Prime Minister remains fully engaged on the issue,” he said.

“The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland is in constant contact with the Prime Minister on the issue and the Prime Minister has spoken in recent days with the Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, and to the Northern Ireland party leaders.”

Mrs Robinson announced over Christmas that she was quitting politics because of severe depression. She will now stand down sooner than planned as an MP, MLA and local councillor. Her DUP membership of the party was also terminated.

On Sunday night, Mr Robinson revealed his wife was currently receiving acute psychiatric treatment from the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.
