La polizia ha rivelato di aver scoperto una pipe bomb parzialmente esplosa accanto ad una scuola elementare a West Belfast
L’ordigno è stato scoperto dagli agenti di pattuglia vicino alla scuola St Mark’s nella zona di Summerhill Drive a Twinbrook.
La scuola e otto case nelle vicinanze sono state evacuate e gli artificieri hanno provveduto a bloccare la strada mentre operavano sull’ordigno, rinvenuto intorno a mezzogiorno.
Hanno eseguito test sull’oggetto sospetto e hanno visto che si trattava di una pipe bomb funzionante.
Dopo quattro ore, i residenti sono potuti rientrare in casa e le strade sono state riaperte.
Si ritiene che l’ordigno sia esploso altrove e poi scaricato nella zona di Summerhill Drive.
Gli investigatori vogliono parlare con chiunque potrebbe aver udito un forte rumore o uno scoppio nelle prime ore di mercoledì mattina.
L’ispettore capo Darrin Jones, comandante per l’area di Lisburn, ha condannato gli autori del gesto.
“Se questo ordigno è stato lasciato intenzionalmente in questo settore o è stato qui abbandonato, quelli che lo hanno fatto non dimostrano assolutamente alcun riguardo per questa comunità.
“Lasciare un ordigno esplosivo funzionante in una zona residenziale è abbastanza avventato, ma mettere potenzialmente in pericolo la vita di bambini piccoli è completamente da insensibili” ha aggiunto.
“Esorto chiunque abbia informazioni o che hanno visto l’abbandono dell’ordigno o forse hanno udito un forte rumore di contattare gli investigatori nella stazione di polizia di Lisburn”.
Margaret Tolerton, consigliere comunale del DUP e sindaco di Lisburn, ha detto che chi ha lasciato la pipe bomb avrebbe potuto provocare una tragedia.
“Sono molto arrabbiata”, ha spiegato a UTV. “Questo ha sconvolto la vita delle persone ed è un fatto pericoloso, che avrebbe potuto causare una tragedia.
“Pensavo ci fossimo evoluti e che queste azioni fossero il passato”.
La parlamentare dello Sinn Féin per West Belfast, Jennifer McCann, riferisce dell’indignazione degli abitanti.
“Quindici case sono state evacuate e abbiamo dovuto lavorare a stretto contatto con la scuola per garantire che gli alunni potessero essere allontanati in maniera sicura dalla scuola”, ha affermato.
“Quest’ultimo punto era il più importante perché l’ordigno è stato abbandonato vicino al perimetro si St Mark’s.
“Ci sono stati enormi disagi e la rabbia è montata nella comunità. Chiunque sia il responsabile deve farsi aventi e spiegare alla comunità, che sostengono di rappresentare, cosa hanno ottenuto mettendo in pericolo bambini, insegnanti e residenti”.
Il consigliere SDLP Brian Heading parla di comportamento avventato: “Non offrono nulla alla gente di West Belfast, lasciata sgomenta per il disprezzo dimostrato per la vita umana e in particolare per la sicurezza dei nostri figli più piccoli.
“Durante questo allarme sono stati evacuati molto residenti e deve essere stata un’esperienza estremamente spaventosa per loro e per tutte le famiglie”, ha aggiunto.
“Voglio congratularmi con la polizia per la loro pronta risposta nel rendere la zona sicura e per aver permesso ai residenti di tornare alle loro case già nel pomeriggio”.

Part-exploded pipe bomb near school
Police have revealed that a viable pipe bomb found close to a primary school in west Belfast had partially exploded.
The device was discovered by officers out on patrol close to St Mark’s in the Summerhill Drive area of Twinbrook.
The school and eight nearby homes had to be evacuated and road closures put in place as army bomb squad officers were called to the scene at about 12.10pm.
They carried out tests on the suspicious object and found it to be a viable pipe bomb.
After four hours, residents were allowed to return home and road closures were lifted.
It is thought that the device may have detonated elsewhere before being discarded in the Summerhill Drive area.
Investigating officers want to hear from anyone who believes they may have heard a loud bang or explosion possibly during the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Chief Inspector Darrin Jones, Lisburn Area Commander, has condemned those responsible.
“Whether or not this device was left intentionally in this area or abandoned here, those who left it showed absolutely no regard for this community.
“Leaving a viable explosive device in a built up area is reckless enough but to potentially endanger the lives of small children is beyond callous,” he added.
“I am urging anyone with information or who saw they device being left or perhaps heard a loud bang to contact the investigating detectives at Lisburn CID offices by calling 0845 600 8000.”
Local councillor and DUP mayor of Lisburn, Margaret Tolerton, said those who left the pipe bomb could have caused a tragedy.
“I’m very angry,” she told UTV. “This has disrupted people’s lives and it’s very dangerous, there could have been a fatality and a tragedy.
“I thought we had moved on and this was behind us.”
Sinn Féin MLA for West Belfast Jennifer McCann said local people are outraged.
“Up to 15 homes had to be evacuated and we have had to work very closely with the school to ensure that children were able to be collected and taken from school safely,” she said.
“The latter was most important, given the fact that this device has been left extremely close to the railings of St Mark’s nursery.
“There has been a huge amount of disruption and anger generated in this community. Whoever is behind this need to come forward and explain to the community, who they claim to represent, what the endangerment of children, teachers and residents has achieved.”
SDLP Councillor Brian Heading has hit out at those responsible saying they engaged in reckless behaviour.
“They offer nothing to the people of West Belfast who will be appalled at the wanton disregard shown for human life and in particular the safety of our young children.
“During this alert a number of residents were evacuated from their homes which must have been an extremely frightening experience for them and their families” he added.
“I want to commend the police for their swift response in making the area safe and allowing residents to return to their homes this afternoon.”
