Pipe bomb a Nutts Corner

Two viable pipe bombs have been found by a police patrol at Nutts Corner, Co Antrim.

The security alert on the Belfast Road started after the devices were discovered in a lay by in the area at around 6pm on Friday.

The pipe bombs were made safe by army bomb experts overnight. They have been taken away for further forensic examination.

The alert ended on Saturday morning. All roads have been re-opened.

Alliance Antrim Councillor Alan Lawther condemned those responsible for leaving the devices.

“It is totally irresponsible and reckless behaviour. Somebody could have been seriously injured or killed,” Cllr Alan Lawther said.

“There could never be any justification for the actions of those behind these devices.

“I would urge anybody with any information about these pipe bombs to contact the police.”

Police have asked anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area or who has any information to contact them.

The pipe bombs are the latest in a series of viable devices found in recent weeks.
