Polarizzazione settaria nei college post-scolastici in Irlanda del Nord

Una conta della confessione religiosa degli studenti nei college post-scolastici (FUrther Education College) nordirlandesi ha mostrato che la maggior parte è polarizzata in termini di cattolici e protestanti.

Cinque delle sei istituzioni hanno molti più studenti di una confessione religiosa rispetto agli altri.

Lo squilibrio maggiore si registra al North West college di Derry, dove gli studenti cattolici superano i protestanti da più di tre a uno.

Il DUP ha detto che troppo pochi protestanti si recano a studiare in queste scuole.

Le cifre dimostrano che vi sono anche molti più studenti cattolici che protestanti nei College South West e Southern regional.

Tuttavia, in altri due primari istituti di istruzione, vi è uno squilibrio opposto della popolazione studentesca, in cui i protestanti superano di gran lunga i cattolici nei College Northern e South Eastern.

L’appartenenza religiosa di circa un quarto degli studenti non è nota.

Un portavoce del Dipartimento per l’Occupazione e l’Apprendimento (Department for Employment and Learning – DEL) di Stormont ha spiegato che le cifre riflettono ampiamente la popolazione della zona geografica in cui ogni collegio si trova.

Il portavoce del DEL ha aggiunto che pochissimi studenti parlano di un “fattore gelo” che potrebbe dissuaderli dal presentarsi presso un particolare College.

Il parlamentare del DUP, Alex Easton, si è detto preoccupato del fatto che un basso numero di protestanti, nel complesso, stanno optando per frequentare i corsi di istruzione e formazione per adulti.

Chiede al Dipartimento e ai College di fare di più per attirarli a frequentare le sei istituzioni.

Sectarian polarisation at NI further education colleges

A religious headcount of students at Northern Ireland’s further education colleges has shown most are polarised in terms of Catholics and Protestants.

Five of the six institutions have many more students of one religious denomination than the other.

The largest imbalance is at the North West college in Londonderry, where Catholic students outnumber Protestants by more than three to one.

The DUP said too few Protestants were going into further education.

The figures show there are also many more Catholics students than Protestants in the South West and Southern regional colleges.

However, in two other further education colleges, there is an opposite imbalance in the student population – Protestants greatly outnumber Catholics at the Northern and South Eastern colleges.

‘Chill factor’

The denomination of about a quarter of students is not known.

A spokesperson for Stormont’s Department for Employment and Learning (DEL) said the figures broadly reflect the population of the geographical area where each college is based.

The DEL spokesperson added that very few students report a “chill factor” that might deter them from attending a particular college.

The DUP MLA, Alex Easton said he is concerned that fewer Protestants, overall, are opting to go into further education and training.

He wants DEL and the colleges to do more to attract them to study at the six institutions.
