Police attacked by masked gang

Police have said two officers “had a lucky escape” after their patrol car was attacked by up to 10 masked men in Dungannon, Co Tyrone.

Bricks and paint were thrown at the officers when they responded to a call for assistance in Moygashel Court, shortly before 11.00pm on Tuesday.

After their vehicle was struck, they quickly withdrew from the area and it was later established that the initial call for assistance had been a hoax.

Condemning the attack, Inspector Keith Jamieson said: “The officers were extremely fortunate to have escaped without serious injury or worse.

“The masonry thrown could easily have caused serious injury to the officers or members of the public.”

He added: “I would appeal to the community of Moygashel to turn their backs on those who wish to conduct such criminal activity.

“I find it frustrating and disappointing that police were targeted in this way and I would appeal to anyone who has any information about the incident to contact police in Dungannon on the non-emergency number 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
