La PSNI rifiuta di commentare i rapporti secondo i quali il personale della polizia potrà recarsi in alcune zone di South Fermanagh con l’elicottero
C’erano state critiche alla polizia perché erano occorse 13 ore per recarsi sulla scena di un furto presso uno sportello automatico, due settimane fa, avvenuto tramite un escavatore.
Dopo le critiche, il comandante della PSNI Michael Skuce si è appellato ai dissidenti repubblicani affinché non stiano più sulle spalle della comunità e lascino lavorare la polizia.
Comunque, sembra abbiano completamente snobbato il suo appello. Venerdì scorso, la Real IRA ha procurato allarmi per aver lasciato ordigni e piccole bombe incendiarie in alcuni negozi di Enniskillen.
Sabato la Continuity IRA ha telefonato avvertendo che ordigni sono stati lasciati nella zona di Moorlough a Lisnaskea e anche tra Maguiresbridge e Lisnaskea.
Si è anche saputo che il 32 Conty Sovereignty Movement, ritenuto dai più collegato con la Real IRA, ha iniziato una campagna di reclutamento lasciando volantini nelle cassette delle lettere nella zona di Newtownbutler.
La chiamata di venerdì pomeriggio indicava nomi precisi di negozi ad Enniskillen, ma dopo le ricerche nulla è stato trovato.
Ci sono state critiche locali per la risposta della polizia, con accuse secondo cui le minacce non sono state prese abbastanza in considerazione, in particolare alla luce di quanta cura è stata presa prima di recarsi a Newtownbutler per la rapina con escavatore.
La polizia respinge le critiche.
Un portavoce ha detto: “La polizia prende tutti gli allarmi bomba con molta serietà e risponde in maniera adeguata.
“Mentre alcuni degli allarmi di venerdì e sabato volevano solo causare inconvenienti, gli incidenti che hanno avuto luogo in Fermanagh negli ultimi 15 mesi indicano chiaramente come i gruppi terroristi intendano attaccare i poliziotti. Gli incidenti che hanno coinvolto gli agenti sono molto ben documentati.
“Tutti questi fattori sono presi in considerazione dalla polizia nella preparazione di una risposta, e la reale minaccia contro gli agenti non dovrebbe essere minimizzata”, prosegue il portavoce.
“Venerdì pomeriggio, siamo stati avvisati telefonicamente della presenza di ordigni a Enniskillen ed in altre zona di Fermanagh.
“La polizia ha immediatamente avvertito gli esercizi commerciali identificati ed il personale ha eseguito le ricerche.
“Anche i poliziotti hanno provveduto a perquisire i locali, visitando i negozi per parlare con i proprietari.
“Durante le perquisizioni non è stato trovato nulla”, ha aggiunto il portavoce della PSNI.
Quando gli è stato chiesto se era un cambio di condotta la richiesta al personale dei negozi di effettuare ricerche di potenziali bombe, il portavoce ha replicato: “La polizia ha costruito da tempo una solida relazione con gli operatori economici, spiegando loro cosa cercare e cosa fare in caso di necessità.
“I commercianti conoscono i negozi e la merce e sanno come assistere la polizia nello svolgimento delle ricerce.
“Non dovrebbe esserci bisogno di queste ricerche da parte dei commercianti o della polizia e chi crea questa necessità dovrebbe sopportarne le conseguenza”, ha aggiunto.
La persona al telefono che ha comunicato gli allarmi per gli ordigni lasciati dalla Continuity IRA ha detto che si trattava del secondo avvertimento.
La polizia avverte che proseguono le indagini su altre chiamate relative a bombe lasciate nelle aree rurali.
“Un chiaro e presente alto livello di minaccia contro i poliziotti esiste nella Contea di Fermanagh e dobbiamo averlo bene in mente durante le operazioni”, ha aggiunto il portavoce della PSNI.
Fonti hanno detto che la polizia non risponderà ad altre chiamate nelle zone intorno a Newtownbutler usando le auto, ma il personale armato sarà inviato con gli elicotteri.
Comunque il portavoce della polizia ha detto: “Vista la minaccia, non sarebbe appropriato commentare le decisioni operative prese in relazione allo spiegamento di risorse”.
Police ‘will only fly’ to get to south Fermanagh
The PSNI is refusing to comment on reports that police personnel will only be allowed to go into certain areas of south Fermanagh by helicopter.
There was criticism of the police taking 13 hours to respond at the scene of an ATM robbery using a digger the week before last.
Following the criticism, PSNI Commander Michael Skuce appealed to dissident Republicans to get off the community’s backs and allow the police to do their job.
However, it seems that they have barely heeded his appeal. Last Friday, the Real IRA issued warnings of devices and firebombs in named Enniskillen shops.
On Saturday, the Continuity IRA telephoned a warning that devices had been left in the Moorlough area of Lisnaskea and also between Maguiresbridge and Lisnaskea.
It has also been reported that the 32-County Sovereignty Committee, regarded as being linked to the Real IRA has embarked on a recruitment campaign by putting leaflets through letter boxes in the Newtownbutler area.
The call on Friday afternoon named several shops in Enniskillen, but after searches nothing was found.
There has been local criticism of the police response, with accusations that the warnings were not taken seriously enough, particularly in the light of how much care was taken before moving into the Newtownbutler digger incident.
However, the police have refuted the criticism.
A spokesman said: “Police take all bomb warnings seriously and respond in an appropriate manner.
“While some of the alerts on Friday and Saturday were designed to cause inconvenience, incidents that have taken place in Fermanagh over the past 15 months clearly indicate that terrorist groups are intent on attacking police officers. The incidents in which officers have been injured have been well documented.
“All these factors are taken into consideration by police in preparing a response, and the very real threat that is posed to officers should not be minimised,” said the police spokesman.
“On Friday afternoon, telephone calls warning of devices in Enniskillen and other parts of Fermanagh were made.
“Police immediately alerted the businesses that had been identified and staff carried out searches.
“Officers also searched premises and visited shops to talk to business owners.
Nothing was found in any of these searches,” the police spokesman added.
When asked if it was a change of policy to ask shop staff to search for potential bombs, the spokesman replied: “Police have long-developed relationships with traders in terms of what to look out for and what to do should the need arise.
“The traders know their premises and stock and how to assist police in carrying out searches.
“There should not be a need for such searches by traders or police and those who create that need must bear any consequences,” he added.
The caller warning of devices left by the Continuity IRA said it was the second warning.
Police say that enquiries into other calls that bombs had been left in rural areas continue.
“A clear and present high level of threat to police officers exits in County Fermanagh and we bear that in mind in our operations,” the PSNI spokesman added.
Sources have said that the police will now not respond to incidents in certain areas around Newtownbutler by road, but only armed police personnel will be sent in by air.
However, the police spokesman said: “Given the threat, it would not be appropriate to comment on the operational decisions we take in relation to the deployment of resources.”
