La neo nominata Assistant Chief Constable – ACC Judith Gillespie ha riferito che i poliziotti hanno fatto tutto quanto in loro potere durante i disordini a Coleraine della scorsa domenica e stanno facendo il possibile per consegnare i responsabili alla giustizia.
La dichiarazione giunge dopo che la famiglia McDaid ha presentato reclamo formale al Police Ombudsman riguardo gli eventi che hanno circondato il suo assassinio.
Benché abbiano elogiato i poliziotti che hanno cercato di salvare McDaid dopo essere stato assalito, la famiglia si è detta preoccupata delle presunte minacce fatte dai lealisti prima dello scoppio dei disordini nel quartiere di Heights, non gestite correttamente dalla polizia.
Hanno spiegato che la morte di Kevin McDaid sarebbe potuta essere prevenuta se la polizia avesse agito prima.
Un altro uomo – il 46enne Damien Fleming – è rimasto gravemente ferito nella stessa aggressione.
Gillespie dice che i pensieri dei suoi agenti sono con le famiglie colpite: “Comprendiamo la devastazione provocata alle famiglie McDaid e Fleming e l’intera comunità di Coleraine e i nostri pensieri sono con loro in questi momenti difficili.
“Siamo totalmente d’accordo con la famiglia McDaid quando dice che questo omicidio non sarebbe dovuto accadere e stiamo facendo tutto quello che è in nostro potere per portare gli esecutori alla giustizia.
“E’ vitale che ognuno continui a lavorare per assicurare che questi brutali attacchi settari siano relegati nel passato. Noi tutti dobbiamo far sì che questo avvenga, alla memoria di Kevin.
“Vi assicuro di nuovo che stiamo facendo tutto il possibile per indagare sui tempi degli eventi che hanno portato alla morte di Kevin.
“Siamo pienamente consapevoli delle preoccupazioni espresse dalla famiglia e da altre persone nella comunità e abbiamo chiesto al Police Ombudsman di eseguire una piena e indipendente indagine”.
Ha difeso il ruolo della polizia durante gli eventi che hanno circondato l’omicidio.
“Sarebbe inappropriato per me commentare specifici dettagli sulle condizioni che hanno portato all’omicidio, in quanto persone sono state accusate e il Police Ombudsman sta eseguendo la sua indagine.
“Comunque, posso assicurare nuovamente che domenica 24 maggio i miei poliziotti hanno lavorato incessantemenre per allentare le tensioni a Coleraine in seguito agli incontri della Scottish Premier League.
“In seguito all’aggressione, i poliziotti sono giunti velocemente sulla scena ed hanno provato a salvare la vita di McDaid praticando la respirazione bocca-a-bocca ed il massaggio cardiaco, agendo inoltre velocemente e coraggiosamente in aiuto di Fleming.
“Questi agenti sono così sconvolti per la morte di Kevin – un uomo che ben conoscevano per il suo positivo lavoro nella comunità – e per il grave attacco contro Damien”.
L’ACC Gillespie ha riferito che una squadra di 60 investigatori sta conducendo una indagine approfondita e fattiva.
Ha concluso chiedendo agli abitanti della zona di mantenere la calma.
Police on defensive over McDaid murder
Newly-appointed Assistant Chief Constable Judith Gillespie said officers did all they could during the trouble in Coleraine last Sunday and were now also doing all in their power to bring those responsible to justice.
It comes as the McDaid family made a formal complaint to the Police Ombudsman about the events surrounding his murder.
Although they praised police officers who tried to save Mr McDaid after he was attacked, the family say they are concerned that alleged threats made by loyalists in the lead up to the trouble in the Heights area of the town were not dealt with properly.
They claim that his death could have been prevented if police had acted earlier.
Another man – 46-year-old Damien Fleming – was critically injured in the same attack.
Ms Gillespie said the thoughts of her officers were with the families affected: “We understand the devastation that this has caused the McDaid and Fleming families and the wider Coleraine community and our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time.
“We agree entirely with the McDaid family that this murder should not have happened and we are doing everything in our power to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“It is vital that everyone continues to work to ensure that such brutal sectarian attacks are firmly confined to the past. We all owe it to Kevin’s memory to ensure that this happens.
“Let me reassure you that we are doing everything to investigate the timeline of events that led to Kevin’s death.
“We are fully aware of the concerns expressed by the family and a number of other people in the community and have asked the Police Ombudsman to carry out a full and independent inquiry.”
She defended the role of the police during the events surrounding the murder.
“It would be inappropriate for me to comment on the specific details of the circumstances leading to the murder, as people have been charged and PONI are carrying out an investigation.
“However, I can reassure you that on Sunday, May 24 my neighbourhood officers worked tirelessly to ease tensions in Coleraine ahead of a Scottish Premier League football match.
“Following the attack, officers were quickly on the scene and attempted to save Mr McDaid’s life by rendering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and CPR and also acted swiftly and courageously in coming to the aid of Mr Fleming.
“These officers are also devastated by the death of Kevin – a man they knew well through his positive work in the community – and by the serious attack on Damien.”
ACC Gillespie said that a team of 60 detectives are carrying out a very thorough and proactive investigation.
She ended her statement by appealing for calm in the area.
