I procedimenti iniziano contro tre imputati – tra cui un ex agente della RUC e sua moglie – tutti accusati di aver alterato il corso della giustizia nelle indagini sull’omicidio settario di Robert Hamill avvenuto a Portadown
Il riservista della RUC in pensione Cecil Atkinson, sua moglie Eleanor Atkinson e Kenneth Hanvey hanno detto in aula di non voler contestare le indagini preliminari e di aver compreso le accuse rivolte contro di loro.
Gli Atkinson, di Brownstone Road a Portadown, sono accusati di aver cospirato tra loro, e con Andrea e Michael McKee, per alterare il corso della giustizia in date diverse tra l’8 settembre e il 30 ottobre 1997.
Hanvey, di Derryanvil Road a Portadown, è accusato di aver alterato il corso della giustizia il 25 novembre 1997.
Le accuse si riferiscono a ciò che i tre imputati hanno riferito agli agenti di polizia che indagavano sull’identità di chi fece una telefonata dalla casa degli Atkinsons alle 8:37 della mattina seguente alla mortale aggressione di Robert Hamill.
Robert Atkinson era uno dei quattro agenti della Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) a bordo di una Land Rover presente sulla scena dell’aggressione a Robert Hamill, avvenuta nel centro di Portadown la notte del 27 aprile 1997. Robert Hamill, colpito a calci e pugni da una folla di lealisti mentre era in compagnia di un suo amico, morì in ospedale dopo 12 giorni a causa delle gravi fratture.
Le accuse contro gli Atkinson e Harvey sono giunte dopo le raccomandazioni fatte dai membri dell’Inchiesta Hamill (Hamill Inquiry), istituita nel 2004 per analizzare la morte del venticinquenne di Portadown.
Il giudice distrettuale Peter King ascolterà le prove raccolte durante le indagini preliminari prima di decidere se i tre imputati dovranno rispondere in tribunale delle accuse rivolte contro di loro.

Hamill case before court
Committal proceedings have begun for three defendants – including a former RUC officer and his wife – all accused of perverting justice arising from the sectarian murder of Portadown man Robert Hamill.
Retired RUC Reserve Constable Cecil Atkinson, his wife Eleanor Atkinson, both 60, and 62-year-old Kenneth Hanvey told Craigavon Magistrates’ Court they were not objecting to the Preliminary Investigation and that they understood the charges against them.
The Atkinsons, from the Brownstone Road in Portadown, are accused of conspiring with each other, and with Andrea and Michael McKee, to pervert the course of justice on diverse dates between 8 September and 30 October 1997.
Hanvey, from the Derryanvil Road, also in Portadown, is accused of perverting the course of justice on 25 November 1997.
The charges relate to what the three defendants are alleged to have told police officers investigating the identity of who made a phone call from the Atkinsons home at 08.37am the morning after Mr Hamill was attacked on 27 April 1997.
Robert Atkinson was one of four RUC personnel in a Land Rover at the scene the night Robert Hamill was attacked in the centre of Portadown by a loyalist crowd, and died in hospital 12 days later.
The charges against the husband and wife, and Hanvey, came after recommendations were made by the Hamill Inquiry into the 25-year-old’s death.
District Judge Peter King is due to hear evidence during the Preliminary Investigation, which could potentially last two weeks, before deciding whether the defendants have a case to answer before a jury in the Crown Court.
