Possibile un nuovo attacco contro il Policing Board

Secondo un importante funzionario, i repubblicani che hanno cercato di far esplodere il quartier generale del Policing Board a Belfast potrebbero riprovarci

Le informazioni di intelligence suggeriscono “una forte possibilità” di un nuovo attacco, ha riferito l’Assistant Chief Constable (Assistente al Comandante di Polizia) Drew Harris.

Mentre la minaccia principale è per l’edificio, Harris ha detto ai membri ed al personale del Policing Board che si trovano in rischio “moderato”.

Lo scorso mese i terroristi hanno portato una vettura carica di 180 chilogrammi di un esplosivo artigianale attraverso le barriere di accesso e l’hanno abbandonata fuori dal complesso nella zona di Clarendon Dock. L’ordigno non è riuscito a detonare e nessuno è rimasto ferito.

La sicurezza è stata stretta intorno all’edificio nella giornata di giovedì, quando i funzionari della PSNI hanno svolto la prima riunione dal tentato attacco e le guardie hanno eretto nuove barriere di acciaio all’esterno.

Il Policing Board era stato creato, in base alle riforme volute dal processo di pace, per effettuare un controllo sulla polizia.

Ian Paisley Jr, membro del DUP, ha lodato i membri dello staff per il lavoro che hanno continuato a fare di fronte alla minaccia.

“Posso lodare il nostro personale? Il nostro staff non merita di essere minacciato, il nostro staff sta facendo un eccellente lavoro per la popolazione”, ha detto.

“E per loro essere soggetti al tentativo di distruggere il loro posto di lavoro e anche loro stessi, penso sia completamente riprovevole e deve ricevere la più ferma condanna”.

Lo shinner Alex Maskey ritiene ironico che i terroristi vogliano attaccare un simbolo della riforma della polizia.

“E’ molto ironico che l’edificio dove hanno sede molti importanti meccanismi di controllo sia stato fatto oggetto di un attacco”; ha riferito.

Il Chief Constable Matt Baggott ha detto al Board che i suoi agenti non permetteranno ai violenti rinnegati di impedirgli di fornire un servizio professionale per la popolazione.

“Abbiamo un periodo difficile nell’affrontare la situazione della sicurezza. Non abbiamo mai detto che non sia grave ma so di avere i più incredibili e professionali colleghi all’opera sulla questione – e Garrison lo ha dimostrato in maniera chiara”, ha affermato Baggott.

Il tentativo di far esplodere la bomba è avvenuto a poche ore dal tentativo di colpire un agente di polizia nel la cittadina di confine di Garrison, nella Contea di Fermanagh. Una unità in borghese della polizia ha sventato l’attacco e due persone sono state arrestate ed accusate.

Fresh attack on police HQ ‘possible’

Dissident republicans who tried to blow up the Policing Board in Belfast are likely to target the building again, a senior officer has warned.

Intelligence suggests that another attack is a “strong possibility”, PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Drew Harris said.

While the main threat is to the building, Mr Harris told members and staff of the independent body that they were at “moderate” risk.

Last month terrorists drove a car carrying 400lb of home-made explosive through an entry barrier and abandoned it outside the towerblock in the Clarendon dock area. The device failed to detonate and no one was injured.

Security was tight at the building on Thursday as senior officers briefed members at the first meeting since the bomb plot and guards manned newly-erected steel barriers outside.

The Policing Board was set up as part of peace process reforms designed to make the police more accountable.

DUP member Ian Paisley Jnr praised the board staff for the work they continued to do in the face of the threat.

“Could I pay tribute to our staff? Our staff don’t deserve to be targeted, our staff do an excellent job for the public,” he said.

“And for them to be subject to an attempt to destroy their place of work and indeed destroy them I think is completely reprehensible and needs to receive the firmest possible condemnation.”

Sinn Fein’s Alex Maskey said it was ironic that terrorists would attack what was a symbol of police reform.

“It is very ironic indeed that the building that is precisely here to house very important accountability mechanisms was targeted,” he said.

Chief Constable Matt Baggott told the board that his officers would not let the violent renegades prevent them from providing a professional service to the public.

“We have a difficult time in dealing with the security situation. We have never said that it’s not severe but I know that I have the most incredibly professional colleagues working on that – Garrison showed that in a very clear way,” he said.

The attempted bombing happened within hours of a murder bid on a trainee police officer in the Co Fermanagh border village of Garrison. An undercover police unit thwarted that attack and two people have since been arrested and charged.
